2. OER – What Is It?
Open Educational Resources (OER) include teaching and learning materials
that were created with the intent purpose of distributing them freely.
3. OER Benefits
• Reduce costs to students
• No cost to purchase the textbook/course materials to students
• Course materials free from publisher influences
• Microsoft Office vs ?
• Ability to adapt courseware to fit student/course needs
• Select materials specific to course objectives rather than an entire textbook
• Materials can be continually updated by instructor as needed
• Resources always available for review and relearning
• Publisher websites that require an access code limit revisits after access code expires
4. OER Challenges
• Finding quality materials
• Open source software
• How long will software be available or will it eventually be sold?
• Does the software have advertising or do students have an opt out option?
• What is the reliability of the software?
• Is technical support available to students and instructors?
5. Where Do I Go From Here?
• I am interested in finding OER software for my Keyboarding students to use at the
post-secondary level.
• Through this course I was able to locate Typing.com.
• being used by at least two K-12 state departments of education, which is promising.
• Website includes advertising that appears can be opted out by the college or student, for
a small fee.
• Software includes a student and instructor portal, which allows my to monitor their
results.
• This course gave me a great start. I am looking forward to learning more about OER
options for my students.
