- The Public Libraries Section provides an active international forum and network for the development and promotion of public libraries. The Section is committed to ensuring the world's communities have free and equal access to information and public library services. The Section’s goals, objectives and strategies are developed within the context of the principles enshrined in the Public Library Manifesto and the IFLA Professional Priorities. This Section also represents mobile libraries.The Public Libraries Standing Committee comprises 20 members representing 16 counties drawn from every continent. The Committee meets face-to-face twice a year. Once at the Annual IFLA Congress (which this year will be held in Lyon) and once at the mid-term meeting which in 2014 was held in Malmo, Sweden.http://www.ifla.org/public-libraries
- The Amsterdam Public Library (commonly known as the OBA) is one on Amsterdam’s premier tourist attractions and attracts 3.8 million visitors each year. The Library was designed by architect Jo Coenen and was opened in July 2007. Spread over 7 floors it is adjacent to the Central Railway station and from its roof top café has amazing views back over the historic canal district. In 2012 it was voted the best Dutch Library.
- The Public Library of Almere, a planned city in the Netherlands, was opened in 2010. It has been designed to replicate a bookshop feel and has a real WOW factor. This photo shows the main circulation desk which has more the feel of the reception area in a grand hotel. - The main reading room in the Malmo Public Library. The shelving on the ground floor is all on castors and can be easily moved to create a large space for author visits, performances etc. The Malmo Public Library comprises two wings this being the newer section completed in 1997. - Foreign language collection at Almere
- The collection at Almere is divided into genres, each with a distinct feel. This is the travel section. Books are laid out in a manner to invite browsing and impulse borrowing.
- Children’s area at Almere
- The Garaget Library in inner suburban Malmo is located in an old bus garage. It is a low socio economic community and many residents live in very cramped conditions. It is accessible for use by the community outside opening hours and available for concerts, birthday parties etc. It has a very ‘lounge room’ feel to it and locals are encouraged to use it as their lounge room including bringing their dinner here and staying to watch TV/play games. - The magazine reading area at Helingsgore which occupies an old shipyard. The building acknowledges its industrial heritage at the same time creating a warm and welcoming environment. This area provides a space to take in the magnificent views out over the harbour where ferries between Denmark and Sweden constantly cross. - Located in an inner Paris suburb undergoing urban renewal the Louise-Michel Library was requested by the community and has evolved to reflect their needs and wishes. - The OBA provides a wide range of seating options for the community, all of which are constantly used. Many have spectacular views.
- At the top centre staff members can be seen moving shelves from the main library floor. This was to make way for a community dinner to be held in the library that evening. This is a new development near Copenhagen airport with the oldest building being about 10 years old. It is traditional in Denmark to have community dinners in the local hall but in this community the Library fulfils this function.https://bibliotek.kk.dk/biblioteker/orestad
- The central structure is a cubby house with reading space on the first floor. If you look carefully you can see a spiral staircase .
- The children's’ area is one for stockinged feet – even international guests must leave their shoes at the dotted line.
- A small cave in which to read.
- The children’s area at Helingsgore reflects the nautical theme of the building and reinforces the sense of place and history to the local community. The ‘submarine’ at the rear opens up into a theatre space.
- The ground floor at Ørestad Library is available to members outside of normal opening hours through use of their membership card. This provides access to the ground floor where the children’s library and general collections are housed plus technology.

- Malmo Public Library has a number of maker spaces. In the technology rooms there is a focus on software packages too expensive for many clients. Assistance in using these is often provided by other clients.

- The Library at Orestad serves as a community and school library. Staff from both institutions share work spares and collaborate on service delivery
- The Louise-Michel Library in Paris was developed closely with the community. Its young team have a very different attitude to service. All staff are constantly on the library floor and react to needs as thet arise. So if there is a group of children someone will read them a story. This place has a great vibe about it and obvious community ownership.
