  1. Good morning! I appreciate everyone getting up early to be here. I am going to attempt to go through each section quickly so that we have plenty of time for Q/A between them.
  2. I am going to tell you a little bit about myself and my organization. Then we will go over tips for preparing your CV and interview.
  3. I am a managing partner with Kaye/Bassman. I have been recruiting in the areas of drug metabolism, pharmacokinetics, and bioanalytical areas for over 13 years. My team and I have placed over 761 scientists. KBIC is the largest single site search firm in the nation and was founded in 1981 and we have 123 recruiters in my firm.
  4. Creating a good concise CV is extremely important. It is your first impression for a potential employer. You want to catch their eye in a positive way. Make sure you highlight your scientific skills in an organized manner. If your publications do not reflect all of the work, then create a section or cover letter that explains your projects & the skills and techniques utilized on the project. Order matters. Make sure you include Name, Home address, personal email and home and/or cell number. If you want to include lab information that is fine, but make sure you include the personal information so the company can correspond with you. If you want to add an objective that is fine but not necessary. On the education piece, PHD information first, then MS then BS. For your PHD make sure you include Major Professor/Advisor, dissertation topic, date finished or anticipated finish. Include only course work, teaching experience, skills, relevant to the position you are applying for. Don’t dilute CV with too much of this. (Again being clear and concise is better) Publications, Presentations and Posters- These really matter. Try and publish as much as you can and present your data as much as you can. It is a lot of work but will pay off when you are looking for a job. If applying for a position, please also include submitted publications. Make sure you most current publications are first!!! If you don’t want to include references at first that is fine. Just put References available upon request. Just make sure… before you start interviewing you have lined up at least 4 references. (Professors, Internships-employers, past lab-mates that are in industry) Double check spelling!! Have someone proof and review CV before sending out. Customized CV for each position! Always keep CV current!
  5. You don’t want to distract the employers. You want to draw them into your qualifications. Again, we covered this on the previous slides: content should be----- Name, Home Address, Daytime number, Home/Cell number, Personal and work email, Graduation Day/Expected Date, Work Experience, Publications, Skills summary, Presentations, Relevant Coursework, Check spelling Don’t –focus on the personal. Keep it about your qualifications. Stay away from pictures, unusual fonts. Personal information (social, marital status, gender, hobbies, name of family members, etc)
  6. The standard process is a telephone interview, an onsite interview and then an offer. Don’t be concerned if you have a couple of telephone interviews or onsite interviews. Each company has their own process. After your first telephone interview, it can take a couple of months to move through to the offer stage.
  7. Get the logistics right- Make sure you know when, where and whom you are suppose to meet with. Make sure you allocate enough time to get there. Do your homework-Research company (products, stock performance, management team, interview team, (check out publications) etc. Prepare 10-15 questions to ask each interviewer. It is okay to ask everyone the same questions. This helps you access if everyone is on same page. Different people may emphasize different skills sets or aspects of the position. At the beginning of each interview of each interview you should have each interviewer go over the position from their standpoint. What they think the primary responsibilities area and how they will interface with you the perspective candidate. Practice your seminar!!!! Always ask at the end of the interview…Do you (mister hiring manager) have any questions about my background? Do they feel like you are qualified candidate for this position? (This gives you a chance to overcome any concerns they may have) Let them know you are interested in he position! Don’t be Arrogant-> When asked a question, answer thoroughly. Don’t rush through or brush it off as if it was not significant or trivial.
  8. Prepare general questions that cover the position (day to day activities, the science, etc) and the company (services, cultures, etc) and the hiring manager (management philosophy, what is their vision, how did they get where they are at in their career, etc) Go through the company literature, (stock performance, pipeline and product therapeutics) and job description to help you prepare questions. Make sure they are open ended and require an explanation. Stay away from yes-no questions.
  9. This is the new trend in interviewing. The best way to prepare for these questions are to --Go through the job description and think about your background and how they are similar. Think of projects successful and disasters, difficulties that you had to overcome and what you learned from them.
  10. All positions within industry evaluate, communications, scientific skills, and corporate fit. Communications skills -> Practice interviewing with a friend, have a 3 rd party review your cv and thank you notes, relax and don’t talk to fast, None verbal- eye contact, hand shake, proper posture, good personal hygiene, dress porfessionally, avoid sighing and yawning, respect personal space. Seminar- Please spend time preparing for it. Without having industry experience, this is the main evaluation tool that the employers use. Tell a complete story from beginning to end. Be able to answer questions. Training, Thesis projects, publications/presentations/posters, will also be evaluated. Be prepared to talk about some of your publications and posters at the interview. Team player, self starter, positive attitudes, trainable, problem solver -> When you are interviewing. Try and work in situations or examples that will take these things into account. Behavioral Interviewing Questions are measuring these traits!!!
  11. Remember interviewing is like a first date! Going over the basics. Be on time or early (this really sends a positive message) Be well groomed, wear a suit. ->(Woman wore leather bustie)! Be Confident and show interest by giving a firm hand shake, making eye contact, and sitting up straight. Be prepared and bringing extra CV’s -you are thinking ahead and prepared. Showing knowledge on the company, pipeline of compounds, stock performance, etc. This again shows interest in the company. Also prepared questions, shows that you are on top of your game. Show enthusiasm (that sounds interesting, that is exactly what I want to do) At the end of each interview you want to ask each interviewer if they think you would be a good fit for the position. This is your chance to overcome any concerns they may have about you. You also want to tell them that you would like to have the opportunity to work with them. Follow-up is also key by sending thank you notes by mail or email. Again, this is a chance to re-iterate your interest and set yourself apart.
  12. Most people say they want to go to a big company but when you ask them about the ideal position and working environment for them….they describe something that is contradictory to the big pharma environment. Every company has different benefits, performance bonus, stock options, relocation packages, etc.
