2. How old are you?
• 0-10 0 0%
• 11-20 23 96%
• 21-30 0 0%
• 31-40 0 0%
• 41-50 1 4%
• 51-60 0 0%
• 61+ 0 0%
Almost everybody who answered my questionnaire was aged between 11-20. This
works really well in helping me gain more accurate and helpful responses for the
making of my magazine, as the age range of people who listen to Alternative music
is stereo typically 16-24 year olds, so I was very lucky to have so many responses
from people in the age range I needed them to be in. This means that my target
audience for my magazine will actually be for people in the age range that listen to
the music, in addition to some younger people.
3. What is your gender?
• Male 12 50%
• Female 12 50%
Coincidentally, I managed to get an even
split in the responses that I received, half
of them being male and the other half
being females, this gives me an average
response regarding what people of
different genders want, and as Alternative
music has no specific genre preference but
just appeals to the people interested in it,
gaining 12 male and 12 female responses
mean that the judgements I make when
making my magazine can be focused on
the even inputs from both genders.
4. What best describes your social class?
• A- University Degree & PHD 0 0%
• B- University Degree & Masters 0 0%
• C1- University Degree / Office Worker 0 0%
• C2- College / Manual Labourer 3 13%
• D- GCSEs / Service Industry 1 4%
• E- Unemployed / Student 20 83%
The most popular response that I received was from people who are still students and
studying, this links in with the fact that the majority of the people who filled in my
questionnaire are aged between 11-20, so would most likely still be in some form of
education. This means that my main target audience will be people who are still in
education, which means that my magazine should be visually interesting and something
worth reading, as most of the people who will be reading it will be reading it for
escapism from school, in addition to also being entertained.
5. What colourschemedo youthinkwouldlook

• Yellow 1

• Blue 3

• Orange 1

• Purple 11

• Green 4

I asked everybody who answered to choose
three colours that they thought would go
well together on the magazine. The three
most popular responses were black, red and
purple. If when in the process of making the
magazine I decide that one of these colours
does not go well with the other, I would
replace that colour with the fourth most
popular colour on there (Which in this
circumstance is both white and silver) After
seeing the responses that I got, I thought
that because black was the most popular
answer, the audience obviously want a
darker looking magazine, which has lead me
to consider using darker shades of the
colours I use (E.g. Burgundy) to give the
whole magazine a darker contrast, although I
do not want it too look too dark that it
becomes boring, so I will need to make some
cunning decisions with the way I place the
images and font on my magazine.
6. What kindof articles appealmostto you?
• Interviews with Music Artists 4 10%
• Insight on Rising Stars 5 12%
• Local Concerts and Tour Date 14 34%
• Celebrity Features 9 22%
• Reviews on New Music 5 12%
• GTK - Get To Know (New Musicians 4 10%
The most popular response for the article was about Local Concerts and Tour Dates. I asked
everybody to select two each, because I plan to involve all of these as features mentioned on the
Contents Page, but having the two most popular responses as bigger images on the page (Like
they have on the NME Contents Page) to show that they are bigger articles in the magazine, which
means that because of their popularity in the questionnaire, more people will be inclined to read
on. I see this as a clever and simple way of being able to respond to the demand of the audience,
and because almost everybody who answered was part of my target audience, it is much more
beneficial.
7. What name sounds best for the
magazine as a brand?
• AMP - Alternative Music Publication 23
100%
• Grunge 0 0%
• Instrumental 0 0%
• Backbeat 0 0%
It is amazing that everybody who answered the question gave the
answer AMP- Alternative Music Publication. This shows the high
popularity this name has over the others, and it was my personal
favourite out of them all, so that way everything has worked out
for the best.
8. What would be a suitable slogan for my
magazine?
• "Alternative Hot-Spot" 2 9%
• "The Indie Dustbin” 13 57%
• (No Slogan) 6 26%
• Other 2 9%
"The Indie Dustbin" gained the most popularity for being my slogan, which is good
because it is very catchy and also tells the audience the type of target audience this
magazine is after. I do not think that I will involve the slogan on the front of the
magazine, however I can put it on the Contents Page or Double Page Spread, just
placing it in subtly, rather than making it stand out, because I feel that although a
slogan can be effective, it is not essential to be seen.
9. Would a Male, Female, or Multiple Peoplebe
best for the maincoverimage?
• Female 12 52%
• Male 1 4%
• Several Females 0 0%
• Several Males 0 0%
• Mixed 10 43%
It was rather close, but Female was the most popular response in the end. It was also a
happy coincidence that this was chosen, because when initially thinking about the
layout of how I want my magazine to look in my head, I pictured having a headshot of
my friend on the front cover, but then also have her modelling in wide shots to feature
on the Double Page Spread. My friend also has pale skin which would go well against
the dark contrast the colour scheme that proved most popular.
10. Where would be best to shoot the cover
image?
• Theatre 0 0%
• Park 6 26%
• Shopping Centre 0 0%
• Recording Studio 17 74%
I only got responses for two answers, Park and Recording Studio, with the latter being
the most popular. I did think of taking a few photos in the local park, because I picture
some wide shot photos with my model on a grey sky day outside in the park on my
Double Page Spread, but I also thought about having my cover image being of my
model in the Recording Studio, as that was where I took photos for my initial project,
so I am familiar with the environment and I can control the lighting. That does not
mean that if I end up finding I took a better photo in the opposite location, then I
would use that instead.
11. What would you like the main feature of
the magazine to be focused on?
• Arising Musician 4 17%
• Review on Musician 3 13%
• Interview with Musician 4 17%
• Personal Stories about Musician 8 35%
• Career of a Musician 4 17%
The purpose of me asking about what feature people would most like my magazine to
be focused on is because it gives me an insight on what my target audience would like
to see mostly, and whatever that was I would use as the Double Page Spread article.
This just so happened to be Personal Stories about a Musician, so I will try to focus my
main story on that to please my target audience. The other stories that were
suggestions to choose from in the questionnaire I will use in the Contents Page also,
but have them about bands I've made up, and possibly a few existing bands, as that
will help me to fill up my Contents Page with much more information.
