A. Background and Context
Within the framework of developing the second generation of the Sharing Economy Platform Youth
Without Borders (YWB) in coordination with the Innovation for Change MENA Hub, a mapping will
be conducted with the objective of analyzing and understanding the existing similar platforms in
the MENA region (their work, target, challenges faced, needs, contain and potential growth and
development.).
The second generation of the Sharing Economy Platform will be developed to create an inclusive
and supportive space. Comprised of civil society organizations from the MENA region, this
generation will promote the exchange of services and knowledge among the to strengthen their
capacities and encourage dynamic fundraising that enables civic activism across the MENA
region.
By Conducting a comparative analysis of the existing Sharing Economy Platforms in the MENA
region and an assessment of potential features to be developed, this mapping will help form the
following: a clear understanding on how to build and manage a platform, a deeper idea on how
to set the objectives of the platform, the services, the rules and the benefits of the members.
B. Purpose of the mission
This mission consists in conducting a mapping on the Sharing Economy Platforms exiting in the
MENA region. It aims to discover, understand, and analyze these platforms in order to prepare a
need assessment on how the second generation of the Sharing Economy Platform should look like.
The expected results of the mapping are:
• Conduct a research to identify existing similar platforms in the MENA region;
• Set up a selection criteria’s through the research;
• Develop a questionnaire to be developed based on the selection criteria;
• Conduct telephone calls and online interviews with CSOs or platform managers;
• Disseminate online surveys through emails, regional CSOs networking platforms and social
media;
• Produce a report to include the analysis of the findings and recommendations.
C. Methodology
The methodology is articulated around two major parts:
Part 1: Benchmarking
A benchmarking exercise will be held by Jamaity’s team to identify the existing platforms in the
MENA region, their strengths, weaknesses, and gaps.
This will happen through the steps mentioned below:
1 - Listing of existing platforms in the region
The first part of the mapping will be quantitative providing an overview on the existing platforms
available in the MENA region.
For each platform, the following information will be provided:
- Mandate of the platform
- Services
- Content including its format
- Target Group
- Languages used
- Positioning of the platform
- Geographic mandate of the platform
The information will be gathered mainly through online research and the network of Jamaity in
MENA Countries.
This first part will lead to preliminary observations on:
The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of
4
- Geographic repartition of the platforms
- Languages used by the platforms
- Target groups
- Social Media Platforms used by these platforms.
2- Focusing on certain platforms
In order to ensure a quantitative mapping, a specific number of platforms will be focused on. The
selection will happen by establishing an evaluation grid to identify the platforms that the mapping
will highlight the most.
The Evaluation Grid of the Identified platforms
In order to choose a specific number of platforms for further analysis, the following criteria will be
adopted:
- The platform’s popularity or positioning (number of users).
- The quality of information available on the platform.
- The user’s interaction with the platform and/or its social media channels.
- The platform is still active.
- The availability of information.
3- Analysis of the selected platforms
Ten platforms will be selected. For each of the selected platforms, Jamaity will provide a well
detailed analysis of their strengths and weaknesses.
The following aspects of the selected platform will be analyzed:
- General information about the platform: including the name of the platform, links,
organization or the people who operate it or are in the origin, specific context for launching
the platform, purpose and mission, partnerships, target audiences, languages used and the
nature of interaction with the users.
- Alexa Rank1: Alexa is a global pioneer in the world of analytical insight. Alexa provides a
global traffic rank that measures how a website is doing in relation to all other sites on the
web over the last 3 months at any given point. The rank is calculated using a proprietary
methodology that combines a site's estimated average of daily unique visitors and its
estimated number of page views over the last 3 months at any given point.
- The number of shares on Facebook: which will be an indicator of the presence of the
identified platforms on Facebook.
- The social media accounts: Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Instagram, Youtube and many
others.
- The services available on the platform: a list of the services, format, resources and tools
available for visitors in addition to the clarity of content, user friendly, or any other links
integrated in the platform and social media accounts.
- The most popular services of the platform.
- Technical aspects of the platforms: the softwares used to develop the platforms
- Users Experience: The analysis of the user experience in the platforms is based on Nielsen
Norman Group’s2 10 general principles for interaction design namely visibility of system
status, match between system and the real world, user control and freedom, consistency
and standards, error prevention, recognition rather than recall, flexibility and efficiency of
use, aesthetic and minimalist design, help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from
errors, help and documentation.
- Key success factors of the platform and its challenges
- Other observation on the platform

In addition, an analysis of the performance of the platforms will be provided.
This Analysis focuses on the front-end performance of the platforms including elements like general
site structure and images.
PageSpeed and YSlow scores3 tell you how well your front-end is optimized for loading time, and
even though they are important, they are only a half of the determining factor.
All the information will be gathered through online surveys, skype meetings, phone calls and online
interviews with CSOs or platform’s managers.
Part 2: Need Assessment:
The need assessment will combine an Identification of the needs and gaps within the selected
platforms and the CSOs working on shared economy in the MENA region through:
- Focus Groups: to help collect more in-depth thoughts and opinions about the
Shared Economy Platforms that need to be developed.
- Interviews: with persons working in the most renowned platforms that have been
studied. The objective is to get in depth information about the opportunities, the
perspectives about their platforms, and the potential platforms that need to be
developed.
It will also provide and analysis of the type of services that need to be developed. After gathering
all the information, Jamaity will work on including the best practices, findings, and
recommendations for the development of similar platforms.
D. Preliminary Findings:
● Platforms identified across the Mena Region
- The total number of platform Identified is
41 platforms distributed as
indicated in the graphic ‘Platforms
identified across the MENA”
- Tunisia contains the highest number with 9
identified platforms.
- Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Iraq, and Saudi
Arabia contain the lowest number with
only 1 identified platform.
- Palestine, Bahrain, and Qatar do not
contain any Shared Economy Platform.
- The Gulf States contain only 5 platforms
- The number of the platforms identified in
North Africa is 18
- The number of the platforms identified in the Middle East is 19
- There are 5 platforms working on a regional level
- Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria seem to be a hub for shared
economy. This is due to the dynamics of the civil society in these
countries.
● Languages Used
- Only 1 platform is in local dialect (Youth’more Tunisia), The rest of
the platforms adopt Arabic, French and English
- Only 1 platform, in Iraq, uses also Kurdish as one of the languages
of the platform
- Only 5 platforms are exclusively in English
- 72% of the platforms use Arabic as one of languages.
- The other languages are mostly English or French.
3
https://gtmetrix.com/blog/pagespeed-and-yslow-are-half-the-battle/
The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of
6
- 75% of the platforms identified use at least two main
languages
- 25% of the platforms identified use one language
- Among these 25% of the platforms that use only one
language, 1 is in Tunisian dialect, 4 in French, 5 in Arabic
and 5 in English.
These findings confirm that Arabic is the first language used
to interact with users in MENA countries along with English
or French depending on whether the platform is in
Maghreb Countries or Mashreq Countries.
● Target Groups
- The summary of the target groups of the identified
platforms is as follows: student’s professionals, student
graduates, youth, donors, employers, job seekers, citizens,
volunteers, civil society actors, research experts,
practitioners and civil society activists.
- Considering that student professionals, student
graduates, and job seekers are Youth groups, then ⅓ of the
identified platforms target youth groups.
- The percentage of platforms targeting volunteers, civil
society actors and Organizations represent 62% of the
total number of platforms.
- 33 out of 40 platforms target civil society actors and
youth groups.
- There is only 1 thematic platform ‘Wiki Gender’ in Egypt
that focuses on gender issues.
These findings are mainly due to these two factors:
First, the high number of young people between 15-29 in the MENA
Region which exceeds 30%4 of the working age population in most
MENA countries. Also, the young people in MENA countries are
facing a lot of challenges (high unemployment rate, lack of trust in
public institutions, lack of access to opportunities, etc.) which
makes the content produced by the identified platforms relevant
to their needs.
Second, the Arab Spring caused an evolution of civil society work
and led to its positioning as a change maker in the region.
● Social Media Channels:
- Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Youtube, Slideshare are the Social Media Channels
used by the identified platforms. These platforms use the Social Media Channels to
disseminate the content produced and combined.
- Only 5 platforms among the 40 identified do not have Social Media Channels.
4
Youth in MENA Region, How to Bring them in - A Book published by OCDE in 2016
The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of
7
- 35 platforms have at least 1 social media channel, mainly Facebook.
- 16 platforms among the identified
ones have only 1 social media
channel, mainly Facebook or Twitter.
- 4 platforms only (Jamaity - Tunisia,
Edraak - Jordan, FundsforNGOs-
Global, Building Markets -Lebanon)
use more than 4 social media
channels, which are Facebook,
and Slide share.
- The number of social media channels
used by the identified platforms is a
good indicator of the positioning of
the latter. Indeed, the more the
platform uses social media channels,
the more it becomes popular.
- There is very little participation and interaction on these previously identified platforms due
to the widespread of social media networks where the target groups debate, discuss and
share information5.
- The spaces where the participation is the most important are not those that offer the latest
or most sophisticated technical devices nor those whose graphics are the most accurate
and current.

Research and analysis
Based on a deep knowledge of the Lebanese field and its social fabric, Lebanon Support offers
evidence-based research, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Lebanon Support’s multidisciplinary team offers accurate evidence and fact-based research using
participatory research methods, including among others desk research, workshops, focus groups, in-
depth interviews, as well as quantitative techniques such as surveys and mappings.
Information management services and data visualizations
Lebanon Support is specialized in online knowledge platforms and information management services,
having more than 10 years of experience in managing and operating humanitarian, development,
and human rights information and knowledge management projects.
Lebanon Support’s multidisciplinary team provides interactive data mappings, online knowledge
platforms and collaborative systems, and data visualizations and infographics among others.
Programs
Lebanon Support’s three programs provide tools, data, research, and analysis in the aim of
enhancing civil society work, reflecting on it, and influencing policy
- Daleel Madani: Daleel Madani is Lebanon's civil society network. Through Daleel Madani,
members of civil society actors can register and benefit from a variety of services, such as
posting resources, projects, call for proposals, events, press releases, and job vacancies.
- The Civil Society Knowledge Centre (CSKC): CSKC is the first and most developed online
research and information platform for civil society organizations, professionals, academics,
and activists in Lebanon. Composed of thematic projects combining qualitative and
quantitative approaches, the CSKC constitutes a seminal and innovative knowledge base
and a publishing platform. This publishing platform serves for original research and analysis on
civil society work and issues and serves for civil society cooperation and collaboration.
- Civil Society Incubator: The Incubator is designed to foster the creation, development, and
growth of local civil society and public action initiatives, organizations, or projects. Incubation
at Lebanon Support is done through an array of services such as provision of office space,
coaching and mentoring on technical issues, management, administrative matters, research,
advocacy, networking, and web development among others. Lebanon Support’s Incubator
program does not follow a ready-made format, but is rather designed and tailored based on
the needs of the partner.
- The Format: The content is written-based.
- The resources and tools available: Publications, reports, and articles about civil society and
thematic issues (migration, gender, culture, etc.)
- Clarity of the content: The content of the platform is clear but it needs more visual support like
videos and photos.

Technical
Aspect of
the Platform
Lebanon Support is thinking security over functionalities and accessibility by using a Drupal CRM
installed on Ubuntu (backend). This choice has a lot to do with quite sober User Interface and a simple
User experience.
The tech choice can be good for new platform but can show several limits for scalability due to the
limited adaption options.
jQuery is used in the front end which was one of the industry standards until several years ago. It offer
a lot of possibilities at some performance cost (websites takes a bit longer to load)
User
Experience
Website with basic features, full of content, and a very average mobile experience
The website has very simple features and contains a lot of content which are badly showcased. The
user can struggle finding the right content.
The user experience is not that great on mobile display with the main menu being invisible and several
overlapping elements (text, images). Tablet experience is a bit better even if it uses hoverable menu
elements plus a lot of menu elements that can be confusing at first sight

Technical aspect of the
platform
Tahaki is a very heavy web application using J2EE and hosted on GoDaddy, it supports
(and can support further) a lot of custom features but this comes at a cost: a high
resource consumption on scalability, a poor code quality score and a very long time to
load.
User Experience A quite good UX (despite the time it takes to load) with simple and practical features.
The Knowledge base lacks contextualization since it relies on the contribution of the
community. The complexity of contextualization will increase over time if not resolved as
soon as possible.
Key success factors of the
platform and its
challenges
When it comes to tahaki.com platform: the free use of the platform has made it a tool
that anyone can use to convert data into maps and share it with the public
When it comes to tahakiPro.com there are many success factors:
● The know-how of the NGO sector operations
● A common Saas that can be used by the big, medium and small NGOs at the
same time.
● Focus groups and the thorough need assessment before starting the
development phase.
● Adopting the agile methodology with MVP and when working to add new
modules and/or features.

Technical Analysis For9a is built on Yii Framework, some of the evidence shows the use of Ruby on Rails,
these technologies are flexible but are difficult to scale and heavy to load (worst score of
all the platforms - page size 12Mo+).
For9a is limiting its regional scope by delivering the website from one server which can
harm the page loading speed from certain countries.
User Experience Despite all these tech constraints, For9a was able to capture the interest of users so they
can navigate through the rich amount of opportunities shared on the platform on a
regional level. The UI is simple, intuitive and enables a good exploration of all the website
sections.
The most negative aspect of the UX is the need to register / login in order to do some
actions or access certain type of information; not a best practice especially for a
content targeted to community
Key success factors of the
platform and its
challenges
The key success factors of for9a are:
- Its positioning of the platform in Arab Countries
- For9a is mainly based on Volunteers which reduces it running costs.
- Its number of users.

The specific context of
launching the platform
There are dozens of organizations and hundreds of initiatives working hard to help Arab
youth find employment opportunities. Yet, most young people feel lonely, followed and
guided only by their families and friends as they move from school to work.
Silatech and Microsoft Citizenship met in April 2012 to create Ta3mal (MasrTa3mal), the
leading portal of Egyptian employability. We wanted to bring together different
resources, opportunities and initiatives for young people, who were eager to learn, grow
and excel, and who did not know where to start.
The response was impressive - from Qatar to Morocco to Libya, each country wanted its
own employability portal. There was an obvious need, but a much larger platform was
needed.
A platform that could be appropriate for each young person according to his country of
origin through rural and urban areas. A platform that would connect young graduates to
career paths, potential entrepreneurs, mentors, partners, investors, change agents, and
appropriate networks and advice. A platform that offers round-the-clock, seven-day
training to build skills and certifications.
The purpose and mission
of the platform
The Tounes Ta3mal initiative offers a comprehensive career guidance service, skills
assessment, and hundreds of online courses to build the capacity of youth and support
them in their job search. Employers can also create their profile in order to post their
available jobs, and consult thousands of profiles and resumes to recruit their future
employees.

Technical aspect of the
platform
Tounes Ta3mel inherits basic features from a generic platform developed in another
country and then adapted to the local specificities. Microsoft is one of the main Ta3mel’s
curators, where the platform uses mostly their technologies in every aspect. Tounes
Ta3mal encountered several technical challenges due to the fact that it is developed in
a regional level. It was hard for them to scale fast technically due to those delays.
The platform uses ASPX for server side tech and jQuery as a client side tech and has an E
grade on YSlow test
User Experience -Despite the delays between capturing the need and implementing it, the user
experience is still decent for nominal scenarios but gets painful when it comes to the
mobile experience because of the abuse of a hamburger menu, confusing animations
and overlapping elements (even for the desktop version).
-Hover to display submenus is a blocking experience for tablets.
-Providing data for signed on people only is very marginalizing for the crowd and non-
tech friendly people and that goes in contradiction with the fact that those people are
among its main target groups
Key success factors of the
platform and its
challenges
Key Success Factors:
The offline component of Tounes Ta3mal is its major key success factor. Indeed, Tounes
Ta3mal partnered with several career development centers in different regions. They
were trained on using the Tamheed test.
Besides, Tounes ta3mal participate in all the job fairs organized. These two factors,
helped the platform maintain its number of users.
Challenges:
Tounes ta3mal has existed for 6 to 7 years now. The Sustainability of the platform remains
the biggest challenge along with partnerships.
Other observation on the
platform
Tounes ta3mal is looking for partners to expand its work and maintain its services.

The specific context of
launching the platform
Having worked in India and Nepal with various grassroots-oriented community
organizations, Sameer Zuhad wanted to work for sustainable civil society development. In
starting fundsforngos.org, Sameer has digitally empowered thousands of NGOs at all
levels in over 150 countries.
Besides, NGOs around the world face unique challenges in attracting and maintaining
resources for their programs. Although development funding has multi-billion dollar
annual disbursements, many barriers prevent NGOs from successfully vying for these
funds. Announcements of funding competitions are fragmented all over the web and
difficult to identify; competition is tough and the application process arduous; and many
NGOs simply do not have the capacity or technical know-how to effectively go after
funding opportunities. These challenges can be especially pronounced for newly formed
NGOs, grassroots NGOs, and NGOs from the developing world. So how can NGOs spend
less time worrying about fundraising and more time changing the world?
This was the founding concept for FundsforNGOs – to help reduce fundraising barriers for
NGOs and practitioners at all levels, sizes, and sophistication. We started in 2008 providing
a trickle of users with free alerts on funding availability. Now the website consistently
generates millions of page views and we have grown also to create free resource guides
on topics such as writing proposals, capacity building, donor networking, using
technology and social media, etc. Even more recently we created FundsforNGOs
Premium for further support with training webinars, sample proposals, a database of
global donors, and much more.

opportunities that can be part of a necessary revolution in education and learning.
First, the platform will broadcast the best Arab professors to the region, offering original
Arabic courses - developed by QRF - to further enrich Arab education. Through its
partnership with edX, the platform will also give Arab learners access in Arabic to courses
taught and developed at top tier institutions like HarvardX, MITX, and UC BerkeleyX. All
courses are delivered at no cost to the learner.
Second, QRF envisions the use of the platform to showcase Arab role models by
broadcasting short online courses by practitioners and professionals from a variety of
fields spanning the arts and sciences.
Finally, QRF believes that the platform will enable the Arab world to take advantage of
the international interest in regional affairs to tell its own story to the world. Arab university
professors and regional experts can use the platform to give courses in English about the
region and its history. This will serve to inform a global audience that is interested in the

The NGO Coordination Committee for Iraq (NCCI) is a member-led organization
established in 2003 to coordinate principled, collective NGO action in order to foster
development, address humanitarian needs, and promote respect for human rights in
Iraq and Kurdistan Region. NCCI has offices in Geneva, Baghdad, and Erbil thanks to
support from funding from member dues, and from donor grants including OFDA, the
Iraq Humanitarian Pooled Fund, and other donors. NCCI serves around 180 local and
international NGO members and observers with coordination, advocacy, government
liaison services, and NGO capacity building. NCCI also works closely with global forums
such as ICVA, Inter-Action, the UK Iraq Working Group, and similar NGO forums around
the world.
NCCI's activities evolved in accordance with the changing situation in Iraq, and in turn
the organization developed into a comprehensive coordination forum where NGOs can
exchange information regarding humanitarian activities and policy decisions in Iraq.
NCCI continues to perform its role in advocacy and lobbying inside and outside Iraq, in
addition to acting as a link for information sharing in regards to humanitarian needs and
assistance. NCCI also provides various support services to its members NGOs.
Third parties - UN agencies, Iraqi authorities, other NGO platforms and donors - also
participate in the exchange of information facilitated by NCCI on relevant humanitarian
and development issues in Iraq.
NCCI STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:
1. NCCI will act as the NGO focal point for internal and external actors. This
includes sharing information and facilitating contact between stakeholders.
2. NCCI is to create the enabling environment for NGOs to advocate for the rights
and needs of people in Iraq.
3. NCCI is to provide the services, advice, and capacity building to support NGOs
in order to enable development, address humanitarian needs, and promote

The NGO Coordination Committee for Iraq, or NCCI, is an independent initiative that was
launched by a group of NGOs present in Baghdad in April 2003. At the time of inception,
the 14 original members focused on establishing a base for objective aid coordination,
highlighting intervention priorities and optimizing aid responses in Iraq. While membership
was originally limited to international NGOs, in 2005, in an effort to empower Iraq's civil
society, NCCI reviewed its structure and opened up membership to national NGOs,

which greatly enhanced their links with the international aid community. NCCI now has
169 NGO members, and 7 observer NGOs, who are international and national
organizations operating in Iraq and involved in all sectors of humanitarian and
development work. The common objective of NCCI's members is to meet the needs of
the most vulnerable people in Iraq.

The purpose and mission
of the platform NCCI's Mission Statement: NCCI is a member-led organization that coordinates

Coordination and Member Services NCCI serves as the NGO focal point for internal and
external actors. NCCI facilitates regular meetings between member country directors, HR
and Admin teams, and advocacy leads. NCCI also hosts the NGO Early Recovery Forum
(NERF) and is a co-coordinator for the Coordination and Common Services cluster (CCS).
Advocacy and Collective Government Engagement NCCI works to create the enabling
environment for NGOs to advocate for the rights and needs of people in Iraq and
Kurdistan Region. We do this through leading the NCCI Advocacy Working Group (AWG)
and working directly with government partners in Baghdad and Erbil through a
dedicated government liaison unit.
Capacity Building NCCI is to provide services, advice, and capacity building to support
NGOs and help them enable development, address humanitarian needs, and promote
respect for human rights in Iraq.
NCCI seeks to be a partner and a useful resource to government agencies across Iraq.
NCCI does not replace any government authority, and all NGOs do work directly with
the relevant government authorities in Iraq and Kurdistan Region. To support this, NCCI
collects information about the impact of regulations on NGOs and shares this with
government authorities to help identify gaps and opportunities. NCCI guides NGO staff
members on where to find the relevant GoI and KRG's government regulations, policies
and documents. Finally, NCCI helps facilitate meetings between NGO leadership and
government authorities to provide a direct way for government agencies to inform NGOs
of regulatory and public policy practices.
The partnerships Iraq Humanitarian Fund (IHF) and USAID
The target audiences The direct beneficiaries of the services provided by NCCI are its member organizations,
followed by the greater NGO community in Iraq (national and international) and UN
agencies. Indirect beneficiaries are people in need in Iraq who directly benefit from the
projects of NCCI’s member organizations, who are supported by NCCI’s coordination,

  • 3. The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of 3 A. Background and Context Within the framework of developing the second generation of the Sharing Economy Platform Youth Without Borders (YWB) in coordination with the Innovation for Change MENA Hub, a mapping will be conducted with the objective of analyzing and understanding the existing similar platforms in the MENA region (their work, target, challenges faced, needs, contain and potential growth and development.). The second generation of the Sharing Economy Platform will be developed to create an inclusive and supportive space. Comprised of civil society organizations from the MENA region, this generation will promote the exchange of services and knowledge among the to strengthen their capacities and encourage dynamic fundraising that enables civic activism across the MENA region. By Conducting a comparative analysis of the existing Sharing Economy Platforms in the MENA region and an assessment of potential features to be developed, this mapping will help form the following: a clear understanding on how to build and manage a platform, a deeper idea on how to set the objectives of the platform, the services, the rules and the benefits of the members. B. Purpose of the mission This mission consists in conducting a mapping on the Sharing Economy Platforms exiting in the MENA region. It aims to discover, understand, and analyze these platforms in order to prepare a need assessment on how the second generation of the Sharing Economy Platform should look like. The expected results of the mapping are: • Conduct a research to identify existing similar platforms in the MENA region; • Set up a selection criteria’s through the research; • Develop a questionnaire to be developed based on the selection criteria; • Conduct telephone calls and online interviews with CSOs or platform managers; • Disseminate online surveys through emails, regional CSOs networking platforms and social media; • Produce a report to include the analysis of the findings and recommendations. C. Methodology The methodology is articulated around two major parts: Part 1: Benchmarking A benchmarking exercise will be held by Jamaity’s team to identify the existing platforms in the MENA region, their strengths, weaknesses, and gaps. This will happen through the steps mentioned below: 1 - Listing of existing platforms in the region The first part of the mapping will be quantitative providing an overview on the existing platforms available in the MENA region. For each platform, the following information will be provided: - Mandate of the platform - Services - Content including its format - Target Group - Languages used - Positioning of the platform - Geographic mandate of the platform The information will be gathered mainly through online research and the network of Jamaity in MENA Countries. This first part will lead to preliminary observations on:
  • 4. The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of 4 - Geographic repartition of the platforms - Languages used by the platforms - Target groups - Social Media Platforms used by these platforms. 2- Focusing on certain platforms In order to ensure a quantitative mapping, a specific number of platforms will be focused on. The selection will happen by establishing an evaluation grid to identify the platforms that the mapping will highlight the most. • 5. The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of 5 In addition, an analysis of the performance of the platforms will be provided. This Analysis focuses on the front-end performance of the platforms including elements like general site structure and images. PageSpeed and YSlow scores3 tell you how well your front-end is optimized for loading time, and even though they are important, they are only a half of the determining factor. All the information will be gathered through online surveys, skype meetings, phone calls and online interviews with CSOs or platform’s managers. Part 2: Need Assessment: The need assessment will combine an Identification of the needs and gaps within the selected platforms and the CSOs working on shared economy in the MENA region through: - Focus Groups: to help collect more in-depth thoughts and opinions about the Shared Economy Platforms that need to be developed. - Interviews: with persons working in the most renowned platforms that have been studied. The objective is to get in depth information about the opportunities, the perspectives about their platforms, and the potential platforms that need to be developed. It will also provide and analysis of the type of services that need to be developed. After gathering all the information, Jamaity will work on including the best practices, findings, and recommendations for the development of similar platforms. D. Preliminary Findings: ● Platforms identified across the Mena Region - The total number of platform Identified is 41 platforms distributed as indicated in the graphic ‘Platforms identified across the MENA” - Tunisia contains the highest number with 9 identified platforms. - Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia contain the lowest number with only 1 identified platform. - Palestine, Bahrain, and Qatar do not contain any Shared Economy Platform. - The Gulf States contain only 5 platforms - The number of the platforms identified in North Africa is 18 - The number of the platforms identified in the Middle East is 19 - There are 5 platforms working on a regional level - Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria seem to be a hub for shared economy. This is due to the dynamics of the civil society in these countries. ● Languages Used - Only 1 platform is in local dialect (Youth’more Tunisia), The rest of the platforms adopt Arabic, French and English - Only 1 platform, in Iraq, uses also Kurdish as one of the languages of the platform - Only 5 platforms are exclusively in English - 72% of the platforms use Arabic as one of languages. - The other languages are mostly English or French. 3 https://gtmetrix.com/blog/pagespeed-and-yslow-are-half-the-battle/
  • 6. The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of 6 - 75% of the platforms identified use at least two main languages - 25% of the platforms identified use one language - Among these 25% of the platforms that use only one language, 1 is in Tunisian dialect, 4 in French, 5 in Arabic and 5 in English. These findings confirm that Arabic is the first language used to interact with users in MENA countries along with English or French depending on whether the platform is in Maghreb Countries or Mashreq Countries. ● Target Groups - The summary of the target groups of the identified platforms is as follows: student’s professionals, student graduates, youth, donors, employers, job seekers, citizens, volunteers, civil society actors, research experts, practitioners and civil society activists. - Considering that student professionals, student graduates, and job seekers are Youth groups, then ⅓ of the identified platforms target youth groups. - The percentage of platforms targeting volunteers, civil society actors and Organizations represent 62% of the total number of platforms. - 33 out of 40 platforms target civil society actors and youth groups. - There is only 1 thematic platform ‘Wiki Gender’ in Egypt that focuses on gender issues. These findings are mainly due to these two factors: First, the high number of young people between 15-29 in the MENA Region which exceeds 30%4 of the working age population in most MENA countries. Also, the young people in MENA countries are facing a lot of challenges (high unemployment rate, lack of trust in public institutions, lack of access to opportunities, etc.) which makes the content produced by the identified platforms relevant to their needs. Second, the Arab Spring caused an evolution of civil society work and led to its positioning as a change maker in the region. ● Social Media Channels: - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Youtube, Slideshare are the Social Media Channels used by the identified platforms. These platforms use the Social Media Channels to disseminate the content produced and combined. - Only 5 platforms among the 40 identified do not have Social Media Channels. 4 Youth in MENA Region, How to Bring them in - A Book published by OCDE in 2016
  • 7. The Mapping of Shared Economy Platforms has been produced with the technical assistance of 7 - 35 platforms have at least 1 social media channel, mainly Facebook. - 16 platforms among the identified ones have only 1 social media channel, mainly Facebook or Twitter. - 4 platforms only (Jamaity - Tunisia, Edraak - Jordan, FundsforNGOs- Global, Building Markets -Lebanon) use more than 4 social media channels, which are Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram and Slide share. - The number of social media channels used by the identified platforms is a good indicator of the positioning of the latter. Indeed, the more the platform uses social media channels, the more it becomes popular. - There is very little participation and interaction on these previously identified platforms due to the widespread of social media networks where the target groups debate, discuss and share information5. - The spaces where the participation is the most important are not those that offer the latest or most sophisticated technical devices nor those whose graphics are the most accurate and current. 5 UNESCO, État des lieux des usages numériques des jeunes dans le sud de la Méditerranée et recommandations.

The user can struggle finding the right content. The user experience is not that great on mobile display with the main menu being invisible and several overlapping elements (text, images). Tablet experience is a bit better even if it uses hoverable menu elements plus a lot of menu elements that can be confusing at first sight

Yet, most young people feel lonely, followed and guided only by their families and friends as they move from school to work. Silatech and Microsoft Citizenship met in April 2012 to create Ta3mal (MasrTa3mal), the leading portal of Egyptian employability. We wanted to bring together different resources, opportunities and initiatives for young people, who were eager to learn, grow and excel, and who did not know where to start. The response was impressive - from Qatar to Morocco to Libya, each country wanted its own employability portal. There was an obvious need, but a much larger platform was needed. A platform that could be appropriate for each young person according to his country of origin through rural and urban areas. A platform that would connect young graduates to career paths, potential entrepreneurs, mentors, partners, investors, change agents, and appropriate networks and advice. A platform that offers round-the-clock, seven-day training to build skills and certifications. The platform uses ASPX for server side tech and jQuery as a client side tech and has an E grade on YSlow test User Experience -Despite the delays between capturing the need and implementing it, the user experience is still decent for nominal scenarios but gets painful when it comes to the mobile experience because of the abuse of a hamburger menu, confusing animations and overlapping elements (even for the desktop version). -Hover to display submenus is a blocking experience for tablets. -Providing data for signed on people only is very marginalizing for the crowd and non- tech friendly people and that goes in contradiction with the fact that those people are among its main target groups Key success factors of the platform and its challenges Key Success Factors: The offline component of Tounes Ta3mal is its major key success factor. Indeed, Tounes Ta3mal partnered with several career development centers in different regions. They were trained on using the Tamheed test. In starting fundsforngos.org, Sameer has digitally empowered thousands of NGOs at all levels in over 150 countries. Besides, NGOs around the world face unique challenges in attracting and maintaining resources for their programs. Although development funding has multi-billion dollar annual disbursements, many barriers prevent NGOs from successfully vying for these funds. Announcements of funding competitions are fragmented all over the web and difficult to identify; competition is tough and the application process arduous; and many NGOs simply do not have the capacity or technical know-how to effectively go after funding opportunities. These challenges can be especially pronounced for newly formed NGOs, grassroots NGOs, and NGOs from the developing world. So how can NGOs spend less time worrying about fundraising and more time changing the world? This was the founding concept for FundsforNGOs – to help reduce fundraising barriers for NGOs and practitioners at all levels, sizes, and sophistication. We started in 2008 providing a trickle of users with free alerts on funding availability. Now the website consistently generates millions of page views and we have grown also to create free resource guides on topics such as writing proposals, capacity building, donor networking, using technology and social media, etc. Even more recently we created FundsforNGOs Premium for further support with training webinars, sample proposals, a database of global donors, and much more.
