3. Jaleel Awini: Air Force Academy
Jaleel Awini originally signed to play with the Air Force Academy
Falcons, but transferred to CU after his second year there. Always a
quarterback, he switched to defense as a Buffalo, and impressed his
coaches with his skill at the new position.
4. Jaleel Awini Said “I just have to keep improving
every day and I should use the
same play-making skills I had on
offense on defense,” Jaleel Awini
said at the time.
5. Jaleel Awini: Toughest Players
Jaleel Awini's coach at Rangeview High School in Aurora, Colorado,
remembers him as one of the toughest players he ever coached. In
one game, he got crushed by an opposing player, and coach Dave
Gonzales said he thought he’d have to take his star player out of the
game. “I don’t know if he lied his way through the concussion test, but
the kid who hit him got ejected for leading with his head,” Gonzales
recalled. “Jaleel got up, shook it off. Next series [he was] back in the
game and led us to a come-from-behind win.”
6. Jaleel Awini: Acknowledged
"It was unbelievable. It showed his toughness, his leadership. That
will always stand out with me.”
Jaleel Awini acknowledged that quarterback would always be his
position, but said the needs of the team matter most. “I was a little
torn at first, but my ultimate goal is to play and help this team in any
way I can.”
