By Jaime Thames
Gender
I am a female. Jaime is a unisex name. Often times I have
noticed that my online classmates assume that I am a male. I
was named after Je t’aime which is French for I love you. My
name often gets misspelled as Jamie or Jaimie. Many times I
have been called Jamie in Spanish. My last name is Thames
pronounced just like the Thames River in London. I am use to
my last name being mispronounced. I have gotten Tames,
Thomas, and Times. You can imagine the mispronunciation
combination I get with my first and last name together.
Education Level
My highest education level is a Master’s degree in
Organizational Management with a focus in Supply Chain
Management. Education is very important. My years of
schooling has taught me a lot about life. It has helped me gain
new insights, develop new skills, and has broaden my
horizons.
Type of Schools
Attended
I attended a public elementary and went to a private middle school.
From there I went to a public high school that specialized in performing
arts. After high school I attended the Fashion Institute of Design and
Merchandising in California. I obtained my Associate’s degree in Textile
Knit. A couple years later I decided to go back to school. I enrolled at
Ashford University online and obtained my Bachelor’s degree in
Business Administration. From there I went back to school and earned
my Master’s degree in Organizational Management with a focus in
Supply Chain Management. Currently, I am enrolled back at Ashford
University to obtain my Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education.
Summarize the type of environment in which you were raised.
Include information about where you were raised and the type of
family structure that surrounded you. Feel free to include any other
information that defines your cultural upbringing.
I had great childhood and have many fond memories of being with family and friends. I had close
family ties on both sides of my family. It was normal to have “Sunday” dinner throughout the week at
both grandparents’ homes. My maternal grandmother would cook large meals made from scratch.
She was also an excellent baker too. She made all her deserts from scratch. Everyone would gather
at her house. It was always a blast. My grandmother never complained or got tired of cooking for so
many people. It was one of her passions and it brought many smiles to people’s faces. My maternal
grandmother always had satellite television. You could never turn the station from her Westerns,
Oprah, In the Heat of the Night, Texas Ranger, or Touched by an Angel. We would also have to watch
Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and the news. On the other hand, my paternal grandmother was the
Queen of casseroles and baked iced glazed lemon cakes. Everyone would also gather at her house.
We would play Chinese Checkers, Uno, Monopoly, Taboo, and many other games. My paternal
grandmother never had cable, so all of her grandchildren grew up watching channel 9 KETC. We
would watch Lamb Chop, Barney, A Reading Rainbow, Clifford, Arthur, and other shows that came on
that station. My childhood was filled with love. One thing I appreciated that my family did regularly
was took pictures. As an adult, I find it priceless looking back at those pictures and remembering all
the fun that was had.
Are there any celebrations, ceremonies, rituals, or holidays that
your family celebrates that reflect your culture? What are they?
How are they celebrated?
Every day was considered a holiday in my family. We did not need an official holiday to
gather the family around. Since the influence of family was heavily ingrained in my
childhood, my siblings and I tend to carry on the same traditions for this generation.
We host holiday functions, dinners, game nights, and have sibling’s day.
Describe any unique talents, interests or hobbies that contribute to
the manner in which you see and experience the world.
I have many talents, interests, and passions. I am most recognized
for sewing and designing clothes. I like to knit and crochet. I know
how to do hair and braid hair. I always enjoyed doing hair when I
was younger. Growing up I perfected my craft and used my skills
to earn money as a part time jig. I do not do hair much these days;
however, I still enjoy the art of transforming someone’s hair into
something beautiful. Also, I have a knack for organization and
detail. I have organized and cleaned many different spaces from
personal to professional. I enjoy traveling and being adventurous.
I also love to cook and bake. I believe my maternal grandmother
played a big role in my love for cooking and feeding other people.
