Music survey results
The purpose of this market research is to find out about the target audience, genreetc. for a new
music magazine. The method in which I used was a survey. I created a survey including a range of
questions to find out the preferred genre etc., I sent my survey out via email and only 10 people
answered therefore it may be biased to a particular age range.
The first question I asked was ‘what is your gender?’
The results came back with 90% of people who answered being female and 10% were male;to
change this I could have sent more emails out to males. Someone’s gender could affect the rest of
the questions for example as more females answered the survey there would be a higher percentage
ofa stereotypical female preferred genre of music I.e. Pop. My magazine could be targeted towards
females more than males.
The second question I asked was ‘what age range are you?’
The results came back with 80% of people who answered being between the ages range of 16 or
under along with 10% being between 17 and 19 with another 10% between 31 and 50. Due to the
feedback in which I received my magazine would be targeted towards teenagers and younger adults

The third question I asked was ‘what kind of music do you like’
This question was a multiple choice question; therefore people could choose more than one answer.
The results came back with no one choosing classic, jazz, country, soul or western music, but hip hop
was picked by 20% of people, dance music was chosen by 50% of people, R&B was chosen by 60% of
people, house music was chosen by 50% of people, rap music was picked by 30% of people and rock
was picked by 20% of people. I have decided to use each genre which received more than 20% of
votes within my magazine. I think it will work as they are each similar (other than rock), but I could
tie a little bit of rock music within my magazine to fit each person’s choice.
The results to this question helped me decide which genres were most popular so that I knew what I
could use within my magazine.
The fourth question I asked was ‘how much time do you spend listening to music per week’
I chose to ask this question to find out whether a music magazine was worth-while as if no one
listened to music, a music magazine would be pointless. The results came back with no one choosing
that they never listen, or rarely listen to music. The results of the survey showed us that each person
asked listens to music at least 3 hours a week and that most people listen to music more than 10

hour per week. This shows us that a music magazine would be a good idea as plenty of people listen
to music.
The fifth question I asked was ‘how do you listen to your music?’
This question was a multiple choice question. I chose to ask this question to find out how people
listen to their music whether it is via phone, ipod/mp3, computer, radio or television. Each option
was chosen at least 3 times. And ‘via phone’ received a vote form 100% of people meaning that my
magazine could include information or deals, etc. on music apps and other apps for smart phones or
competitions to win phones or iTunes vouchers as well as information about
computers/radios/television.
The sixth question I asked was ‘do you have an iPod/mp3 player? If so… how many songs?’
I chose to ask this question to find out a rough idea of how many people have ipods, this was so that
I could possibly include competitions to win itunes vouchers in my magazine. I also chose to see
whether people listen to a lot of songs or just a few, the results shown me that 20 % of people asked

songs on their ipod.
The seventh question I asked was ‘how much would you be willing to spend on a magazine?’
I decided to ask this question within my survey so that I could understand the amount people would
spend. I wanted to find this out so that I could come up with the correct price which would be
suitable. Although 20% of people said they wouldn’t buy a magazine, 60% of people said they would
spend between £2 and £3.99 therefore my price range would be around £2.50.
The eighth question I asked was ‘what music magazines do you read?’
I chose to ask this question to see which magazine was most popular so that I could base my
magazine on qualities from it. Although 5 people said that they didn’t read any magazines, 3 people
said they read NME and 2 people said they read Q, along with 1 person reading billboard and

The ninth question I asked was ‘how often do you to concerts?’
The results for the ninth question in my survey shown that 60% of people said they go to concerts
sometimes, there for I could include upcoming concerts and deals/links within them. I think this
would be a good idea as in my survey, nobody said that they ‘never’ went to concerts
The tenth question I asked was ‘where do you hear about the latest music?’
The results for the final question in my survey shown that 60% of people hear about their music on
social networking sites, which shows my magazine could include links and competitions throughout
social networking sites, along with promoting the latest music within my magazine also.
