When I was a young boy in the Karoo, one of my tasks was to prime the water pump. I had to push a lever down several times to prime the pump with water so that it would function properly.
In essence, I was kickstarting the pump so that it could produce water all day long.
Humans are like water pumps. We need to prime ourselves so that we can be effective throughout the day. This is where morning rituals and habits become invaluable. The only time when I'm selfish is the first two hours after waking. This is when I spend time on myself only. I've realised that spending time on myself is not selfish but rather, self-preserving. That time alone centres me so that I can tackle each day with vim and vigour.
Here's a snapshot of my ideal morning routine. I said 'ideal' because in many instances I miss it by a mile. I know when I miss my rituals my day's off-kilter and I'm not as sharp as I could be.

Imaginary Life
Don’t live an imaginary life when you know
that you are lazy. It’s fine to fantasise when
you know that you are a dedicated individual
who views challenges as an opportunity,
while others deem life as unfair. Be grateful,
God shall make your life a strong pillar, a
source of encouragement and wisdom as a
part of your end results. It’s good to have a
dream but be careful that your dream doesn't
turn into a nightmare, rather focus on trying
to make a better life. Take each journey as a
vision to conquer. Don’t rush things. An
imaginary life will keep knocking on your door
until you accomplish your destined future.
Be the best you can possible be. Stop crying
and make your life a meaningful inspirational
life that will make the rest of the world a
great pillar of change. Be the bridge of faith
for all people who lack confidence to
abstract the visionary life. Many struggle
to face lifes challenges, instead they blame
other people for their past failures.
how I prime my pump. When I have an early
business meeting I make sure I do at least three
rituals. Salat, meditation and Five Minute
Journal. And, of course, showering. I love the
Five Minute Journal because it helps prime my
brain and cultivates gratitude. I use it both in
the morning and evening. The journal was co-
created by UJ Ramdas andAlex Ikonn in 2013.
In the morning: Read an inspiring quote. List
3 things that would make my day great. List 3

things I’m grateful for. Set up an affirmation
for the day. In the evening: List 3 amazing
things that happened today. Reflect on
how I could have made today better. The
benefit of priming the pump is that it helps
you get things done in the day. Once
you’ve completed one task, you can do
another and another. NavalAdmiralWilliam
H. McRaven, 9th commander of U.S.
Special Operations Command inspired me
with a speech he gave at the University of
Texas inAustin. To paraphrase, he said that
we should make our bed every day. One
small task leads to another task which leads
to another. And, if you have a bad day, at
least you come back to a made bed. So,
make your bed and set up your rituals so
that you can transform your life one task
at a time. References: Five Minute Journal
