Patterns of Migration Patterns of Transatlantic Migration In the "swarming" of 1870-1914 Europeans and americans travelled for different reasons, for different lengths of time, and over different distance. Some were Intra-European migrations, while others were Intra-American, but cross-Atlantic migration boomed. This was partly due to old inhibiting institutions such as serfdom ending, and new ones like free labor, private property protections, and credit were beginning.
3. Reasons for migration Included social, political, religious, and economic. Cultural pressures encouraged immigrants to stay in America. People who came and went were looked down on as being too crass to understand the greatness of America and its freedom from oppression.
