  1. this can be up as the delegates arrive - NB Tutor: We prefer you to keep the register on your desk throughout the day in case of emergency and would like you to encourage attendees to sign in during the networking period at the start of the day.   2. Give out Handout 1 and ask delegates to complete ( will revisit at end) Check whether delegates have any aims and objectives over and above those identified. Record in flip-chart and return to these at end of workshop
  3. ECM - wider emphasis on Safeguarding for all learners (esp vulnerable adults) and also staff - all involved in learning programmes. Will be broad-based document – remember Ofsted remit now very wide indeed – includes social care services for children, as well as all old ALI remit from WBL to prisons. Will be context documents, as now – probably more important than currently, to help understand how CES applies to your organisation. Implications for self-assessment reports for anyone due to be inspected post Sept 09, so need to start considering aspects as soon as any indication of what they are e.g. can already look at wider interpretation of Safeguarding – also FFE. Implications for inspections –Annual risk assessment for every provider – this will be published – can influence timing of inspection. Early indications are 4 yearly inspections for Satisfactory Providers and 6 years for high performing providers. Will be published ‘health checks’ 3 years after inspection. Shorter notice periods – possibly some no notice?
  4. Emphasis that although LSC/DWP, Ofsted all use your SAR - its main purpose is to help organisations improve the quality of what they do
  5. Emphasize role of SAR and QIP as part of business planning and marketing and as aprt of benchmarking/quality. Remind delegates that Ofsted us SAR/QIP as part of pre-inspection work. Get delegates to say what other documents inspectors use as part of their preparation and record on flip-chart. SAR and QIP Data LSC views LSC provider summary Pre-inspection commentary produced Advise delegates top check info on Gateway for accuracy. If SAR now a little out-of-date, may wish to upload summary of progress to date on Gateway.
  6. Ask delegates how do they make sure staff – and other stakeholders – are kept informed of progress against QIP so that they can take full part in self-assessment when that time comes around
  7. Emphasise importance of looking at every aspect of learner’s journey. Must be an honest appraisal of where you are in terms of quality of provision Should pint put where things have improved and as a result of what actions Give out Handout 2
  8. Report judgments must be based on evidence – not subjective opinion Wide range of sources of evidence. Ask delegates for any other sources they may have
  9. Not War and Peace – people won’t read it, so what’s the point! Clear and concise – cut out waffle – use Appendices for additional information e.g. staffing/structure charts. Some organisations (esp senior managers/Boards f Directors?) want a positive rather than an accurate report – not happy to acknowledge things aren’t good enough. Need to fight that battle with them if necessary -emphasis far worse to have Ofsted say you are Inadequate!
  10. Give out Handout 2a Suggested content for the introduction – cover these aspects briefly, with Appendix for detail of it’s very complex
  11. Useful to have this summary near the beginning of the SAR so that it gives a picture before the reader gets into the detail
