2. The magazine follows a clear colour scheme
of white and blue. This is something the
magazine has done for this particular issue.
By following the colour scheme the audience
associated the white and blue colour with the
movie. This helps the advertising of both the
magazine and film. It has been consistently
done and is something our group will
consider when we create our magazine.
The masthead is very large taking up
around I fifth of the page. This makes the
brand stand out on the page and allows it
to be seen easily by customers.

The use of the tag line under the title creates
interest for someone reading over the magazine
page.
The layout of the magazine front cover shares a lot of
similarities with the main poster in the Sherlock
Holmes campaign. This gives it the appearance of a
poster this makes the magazine more professional
and helps with advertising for both the film and
magazine simultaneously.
The names of other films which are going to be made in the future are
featured here this will make people interested about what they are
especially with the pictures used and will provoke them to buy the
magazine.
The costume shows the audience that the film
is set in the past. This would appeal to fans of
the Sherlock Holmes books as the character is
dressed in the appropriate clothes suggesting
the movie follows the books.
3. The main actor in the film is in character in
the picture. This can be seen by his clothes
and the gun, these are stereotypical of a
gangster from the 1920’s-1930’s.
The masthead contains the largest font on the page, this
makes it stand out on a shelf of magazines. This combined
with the fact the brand is well known will attract people to
the magazine.
The character has a serious
expression on his face, this
shows the readers he is a
serious character. His gaze is
also looking in a different
direction to the camera making
the audience wonder what he is
looking at.
The use of the hyperbole grabs the attention of the
audience. By using the name of the leading actor
rather than the film it makes the audience want to
read about the actor rather then just watch the
film which can only be done by buying the
magazine.
This strip shows people the
magazine is about a variety of major
films in 2010. The words ‘first look’
also draws people in to read about
the release of the films.
The names of other films show what’s inside
the magazine. This will appeal to the
audience who are interested in these
movies.
The bar code is generally situated in the
bottom right or left corner of the magazine
this is a convention I will have to use when
creating my magazine.
The costume and lighting make the
character stand out in the picture
so everything is easy for the
audience to see and read from a
distance away like the large bold
writing giving the title of the film
away.
4. After looking at existing film magazine covers I have analysed the different conventions they’ve used and
through this I now have ideas of what to use in our magazine cover. This gives me a good idea of the
conventions of magazine trailers and what we should include when we do our magazine cover. For example we
will need to include a large image of a main character of the movie which could be the main protagonist or
antagonist since our movie shows the story from both sides. The masthead should be recognisable with its
unique font and should take up one fifth to a quarter of the page. The second largest font on the page should
be the name of the movie so it can be recognisable to people who see the magazine in shops.
