Maseka
Maseka is the Founder of Girls in Aviation Africa and is also a
pilot. She wanted to study to become a pilot from an early age,
but had resistance from her family due to it not being perceived
to be a female job role, the associated costs and the risk of
injury.
So Maseka compromised and decided to study law but - whilst
finding it very interesting - she still had a huge urge to train to
become a pilot.
So she continued her studies and found an opportunity to
become a light aircraft /microlight pilot
Microlight pilot
As a microlight pilot - Maseka has had some amazing
experiences. This has included flying over the coast of eastern
Kenya spotting whale sharks from above as part of a
conservation programme.
She has also had the experience as part of this pilot to swim
with the sharks - amazing!
Challenges
There are challenges facing women in the industry including
there being less representation, so women are somewhat
marginalised in aviation. There have also been instances
whereby women don’t always get equal pay, opportunities and
benefits.
It can be very expensive to train, and unlike in other countries
such as the UK and USA, there are not opportunities to train
now and pay later/pay once qualified. There aren’t currently
any well known training grants/sponsorship from African airlines
to help more girls go into aviation careers.
How to get a role in aviation
There are lots of opportunities in aviation, and this doesn’t
solely mean airline pilots, there are also the many ground staff
and airline head office roles. You could have a job helping
guide planes into airports from the sky, or helping them to park
on the ground. There is a lot to choose from!
Qualifications needed include maths, geography, sciences and
English. You must be passionate and determined to succeed in
a challenging male-dominated environment.

Jane - Uganda Wildlife
Authority Ranger
About Jane
Jane is a Uganda Wildlife
Authority ranger based in
Bwindi Impenetrable National
Park which is in South West
Uganda. She is from the East
of Uganda and has been a
ranger for 4 years.
How do you become a
Gorilla ranger
In Bwindi, Uganda?
Jane was selected to become a ranger
after she went through a tough application
process. She had to prove that she is
suitable for the job and has the dedication /
commitment to succeed in this very
challenging role.
A typical day as a gorilla
ranger
Days can be varied because the role of the
rangers is split between escorting tourists
who are doing gorilla trekking - these treks
can be very challenging with steep inclines,
slippery conditions and a group to keep
safe. However the rangers also do night
camps which last 5 days during which they
are monitoring the forest - ensuring there
isn’t any danger to the wildlife. They also
work on intelligence and investigations to
ensure the area remains safe for wildlife
and humans.
How do you train to
be a ranger?
Following the successful application
process, the new trainees go through 4
months of military training, this is very
intense and requires dedication and
passion to succeed. Following this training,
the recruits do further training for one
month to understand conservation and the
environment and wildlife they will protect.
How can more women
become rangers?
In Bwindi, there are currently 42 female
rangers - an impressive number! It is
possible for more women to become
rangers if they are passionate about
the work and opportunity, study hard,
be prepared to train hard and reach for
your goals and ambitions. We also
need to promote this work more so
more women are aware of the
opportunity.

Bijoux Mussa Watne
Creative Director and Founder:
Bijoux Trendy
About me
I am originally from Tanzania, born and raised. I did most of my schooling in Dar es Salaam
Tanzania. I currently live in Oslo Norway. My interests range from travelling, art design, working
out, outdoor activities, reading and dancing. I going out, meeting new people and building
relationships.
I have always had an interest in fashion from a very early age. I grew up watching my mother tailor
her own clothes and I truly wanted the same for myself.
I would piece fabrics together until I was able to make proper garments that I could wear out. The
passion for fashion grew to a point where I was able to make it a source of income and support
myself financial.
Bijoux Trendy
Is a ready to wear eco-friendly Tanzanian fashion brand
catering to both women and men, with fabrics made out
of 100% cotton and viscose.
We sell a variety of clothing items from trousers, skirts,
dresses, t-shirts, jumpsuits and shorts to name a few.
Most of our clothing items are sold at our physical store
in Dar es Salaam, Masaki or on our online webstore.
A challenge we have faced most as a brand is having to
follow up on payments for orders customers have placed.
What inspires you?
I draw inspiration mostly from my surroundings. It
is usually when going about a normal day which
could involve watching a movie or documentary or
even attending an event or doing a coffee run.
I also seek inspiration from travelling or being one
with nature, taking a hike or even strolls at the
beach when I’m most relaxed.
Some of my design colours and patterns do
resemble water and nature itself.
My tips to enter a career in fashion:
Most important tip of all is to have a passion for
fashion. It should be something you are not afraid of
staying up late at night for or waking up early in the
mornings. Once you have the passion for it then these
are other tips to consider;
1. Do your research - get to know your market and
target audience to well before launching your
products.
2. Know your competitors - within your area of
business and those outside. Get to know the
products they offer and how you can better what
you offer your customers.
3. Find a problem and solve it - so you don’t work
aimlessly without a goal. This helps to identify a
specific niche you want to cater to in fashion.

About me:
- My name is Siyaeli Moshi (Elly), first born in a family of 4 (two girls &
2 boys).
- Grew up in Dar es Salaam but got the opportunity to study my
O’level in Zambabwe and attend my university in Namibia.
- Always had a passion in Hospitality since I was little. Examples
include preparing table for dinner on Sundays for the whole family
and serving. I can say, hospitality has been in my blood since I was
in my mums womb ☺.
- After university, my first job in tourism was in Namibia, a company
called Namibia Wildlife Resort (NWR) as a Sales Consultant, it was
an amazing time indeed and I got to learn a lot.
About me:
- After being away from my beautiful country for a long time, I decided to come back home to Tanzania and that
is when my amazing bush life started. I worked for a company called Singita, in the Serengeti, for almost 8
years.
- I left Singita in December 2018, wanting to explore and to know how the town hotels works. I moved to Dar es
salaam and worked for Peacock Hotel as a Managing Director for few months. Only to realize that Town hotels
were not my thing.
- I got the opportunity to join an amazing company Asilia. Started with a Camp called Sayari as a Guest
Relations then, moved to be an Assistant Manager at Sayari Camp then Moved to another Asilia Camp called
Namiri Camp at the Central as Assistant Camp Manager.
- With Covid, Dunia Camp was closed for almost one year. On the May 6th, 2021, that is when we re – open
Dunia Camp. It was a great pleasure to be part of this amazing experience. Since then, I have been Managing
Asilia Dunia Camp.
Located on a major migration corridor in a spectacular location in the heart of the Serengeti, Dunia
offers easy access to the scenic Moru Kopjes and game-rich Seronera region. Big cats, rhino, and
super pride of lion are plentiful, and The Great Migration regularly passes through camp.
Dunia is the only camp in Africa run entirely
by women and the team is an inspirational example of what
women can achieve in a male-dominated industry.
The world
is
changing;
women
are taking
over the
world!
My role at camp
I oversee the Dunia Camp as a whole, meaning
All the operations that is, guests related matters, all staff
matters, maintenances, all logistics, can say everything
concerning Dunia Camp, I am in charge off.
What are the challenges?
Most of the challenges that we face as ladies, is being away
from our bundles of joy. As most of us are mothers' lots of
sacrifice that we do leave our little ones at home at such
young age.
What do you love about your job?
The nice thing about working in hospitality is feeling that the
work you do for others is appreciated. It is a great feeling
knowing that you've just made someone's day (or holiday) by
making sure they enjoyed their stay, guests felt at home and
enjoyed one of their best experiences.
Also, it's fun – as in enjoyable. All the dynamics, all the
shifting with different responsibilities and the feeling you
have when you start training and helping others. That
fulfilment that the staff feel after they have learned and
understand what they were trained on - it's more than
satisfactory at the end of the day.
My top tips for finding a career like mine!
Be a learner;
acquire training,
coach and read
Whatever you
do, do it to the
best of your
ability.
Find your niche
/your passion
/specialization
and master it
fully. Choose
something that
you love doing
…and 1 more:
Choose
something that
you love doing!

  • 4. Maseka Maseka is the Founder of Girls in Aviation Africa and is also a pilot. She wanted to study to become a pilot from an early age, but had resistance from her family due to it not being perceived to be a female job role, the associated costs and the risk of injury. So Maseka compromised and decided to study law but - whilst finding it very interesting - she still had a huge urge to train to become a pilot. So she continued her studies and found an opportunity to become a light aircraft /microlight pilot
  • 5. Microlight pilot As a microlight pilot - Maseka has had some amazing experiences. This has included flying over the coast of eastern Kenya spotting whale sharks from above as part of a conservation programme. She has also had the experience as part of this pilot to swim with the sharks - amazing!
  • 6. Challenges There are challenges facing women in the industry including there being less representation, so women are somewhat marginalised in aviation. There have also been instances whereby women don’t always get equal pay, opportunities and benefits. It can be very expensive to train, and unlike in other countries such as the UK and USA, there are not opportunities to train now and pay later/pay once qualified. There aren’t currently any well known training grants/sponsorship from African airlines to help more girls go into aviation careers.
  • 7. How to get a role in aviation There are lots of opportunities in aviation, and this doesn’t solely mean airline pilots, there are also the many ground staff and airline head office roles. You could have a job helping guide planes into airports from the sky, or helping them to park on the ground. There is a lot to choose from! Qualifications needed include maths, geography, sciences and English. You must be passionate and determined to succeed in a challenging male-dominated environment.
  • 8. Q&A time - who has a question? Maswali na Majibu!

  • 10. Jane - Uganda Wildlife Authority Ranger
  • 11. About Jane Jane is a Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger based in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park which is in South West Uganda. She is from the East of Uganda and has been a ranger for 4 years.
  • 12. How do you become a Gorilla ranger In Bwindi, Uganda? Jane was selected to become a ranger after she went through a tough application process. She had to prove that she is suitable for the job and has the dedication / commitment to succeed in this very challenging role.
  • 13. A typical day as a gorilla ranger Days can be varied because the role of the rangers is split between escorting tourists who are doing gorilla trekking - these treks can be very challenging with steep inclines, slippery conditions and a group to keep safe. However the rangers also do night camps which last 5 days during which they are monitoring the forest - ensuring there isn’t any danger to the wildlife. They also work on intelligence and investigations to ensure the area remains safe for wildlife and humans.
  • 14. How do you train to be a ranger? Following the successful application process, the new trainees go through 4 months of military training, this is very intense and requires dedication and passion to succeed. Following this training, the recruits do further training for one month to understand conservation and the environment and wildlife they will protect.
  • 15. How can more women become rangers? In Bwindi, there are currently 42 female rangers - an impressive number! It is possible for more women to become rangers if they are passionate about the work and opportunity, study hard, be prepared to train hard and reach for your goals and ambitions. We also need to promote this work more so more women are aware of the opportunity.

  • 18. Bijoux Mussa Watne Creative Director and Founder: Bijoux Trendy
  • 19. About me I am originally from Tanzania, born and raised. I did most of my schooling in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. I currently live in Oslo Norway. My interests range from travelling, art design, working out, outdoor activities, reading and dancing. I going out, meeting new people and building relationships. I have always had an interest in fashion from a very early age. I grew up watching my mother tailor her own clothes and I truly wanted the same for myself. I would piece fabrics together until I was able to make proper garments that I could wear out. The passion for fashion grew to a point where I was able to make it a source of income and support myself financial.
  • 20. Bijoux Trendy Is a ready to wear eco-friendly Tanzanian fashion brand catering to both women and men, with fabrics made out of 100% cotton and viscose. We sell a variety of clothing items from trousers, skirts, dresses, t-shirts, jumpsuits and shorts to name a few. Most of our clothing items are sold at our physical store in Dar es Salaam, Masaki or on our online webstore. A challenge we have faced most as a brand is having to follow up on payments for orders customers have placed.
  • 21. What inspires you? I draw inspiration mostly from my surroundings. It is usually when going about a normal day which could involve watching a movie or documentary or even attending an event or doing a coffee run. I also seek inspiration from travelling or being one with nature, taking a hike or even strolls at the beach when I’m most relaxed. Some of my design colours and patterns do resemble water and nature itself.
  • 22. My tips to enter a career in fashion: Most important tip of all is to have a passion for fashion. It should be something you are not afraid of staying up late at night for or waking up early in the mornings. Once you have the passion for it then these are other tips to consider; 1. Do your research - get to know your market and target audience to well before launching your products. 2. Know your competitors - within your area of business and those outside. Get to know the products they offer and how you can better what you offer your customers. 3. Find a problem and solve it - so you don’t work aimlessly without a goal. This helps to identify a specific niche you want to cater to in fashion.

  • 30. Dunia is the only camp in Africa run entirely by women and the team is an inspirational example of what women can achieve in a male-dominated industry.
  • 32. My role at camp I oversee the Dunia Camp as a whole, meaning All the operations that is, guests related matters, all staff matters, maintenances, all logistics, can say everything concerning Dunia Camp, I am in charge off. What are the challenges? Most of the challenges that we face as ladies, is being away from our bundles of joy. As most of us are mothers' lots of sacrifice that we do leave our little ones at home at such young age.
  • 33. What do you love about your job? The nice thing about working in hospitality is feeling that the work you do for others is appreciated. It is a great feeling knowing that you've just made someone's day (or holiday) by making sure they enjoyed their stay, guests felt at home and enjoyed one of their best experiences. Also, it's fun – as in enjoyable. All the dynamics, all the shifting with different responsibilities and the feeling you have when you start training and helping others. That fulfilment that the staff feel after they have learned and understand what they were trained on - it's more than satisfactory at the end of the day.
  • 34. My top tips for finding a career like mine! Be a learner; acquire training, coach and read Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability. Find your niche /your passion /specialization and master it fully. Choose something that you love doing
  • 35. …and 1 more: Choose something that you love doing!
