COURSE NAME: CST215 Routing and Switching Essentials
Credit Value: 4
Total Course Hours: 56
Prerequisite Course(s): CST115
Corequisite Course(s): None
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is the second level networking technologies course. Students will increase their depth of
knowledge and skills required to implement modern TCP/IP networks.
In this course students continue to learn about the networking models and related TCP/IP protocols. Modern
switching techniques including Virtual LANs (VLANs), Spanning Tree Protocol, and other switching topics are
covered in some depth.
By the end of the course the student will be able to plan for and configure switches to provide resilient
connections through redundancy, create and manage VLANs, and apply fundamental security concepts. The
student is now able to configure more complicated networks.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Canadore College resides on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg and within lands protected by the
Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850. This land is occupied by the people of Nipissing First Nation, Treaty #10 in
the Robinson Huron Treaty of 1850 since time immemorial.
PLAR INFORMATION
This course is eligible for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition. Students are advised to discuss options
with their program coordinator.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, the student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
1.0 Explain networking terminology and
concepts.
2.0 Understand and apply IPv4 and IPv6
Addressing and Subnetting
2.1
3.0 Understand the role of the switch and
switching in a packet switched network.
4.0 Configure switches and switching protocols
including creating and managing virtual LANs
(VLANs).
5.0 Examine basic network design,
documentation and cabling techniques to
diagnose and troubleshoot small to mid-sized
networks.
6.0 Understand and use application layer
TCP/IP protocols such as ICMP.
7.0 Apply fundamental network security
configurations to protect data and network
resources.
8.0 Explain additional layers in the OSI model
and understand its relationship to the TCP/IP
model.
