Immunization Coverage Is Necessary To Reduce Child Mortality
3. For example, the calculation of immunization coverage for influenza in the people of age 65 years and
over would be calculated as:
People of age 65 years and over receiving influenza vaccine in the previous season X 100%
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total Population of age 65 years and over

In India, immunization is a very
important component in the
continuum series of care for
reproductive, maternal, newborn,
child and adolescent health
(RMNCH+A) because these vaccines
can work in a log run to help reduce
the child mortality and in achieving
MDG goal 4. It must be a fast and
timely action for infants and children
up to 2 years old because this is the
very crucial time for a child. India have
been moderately slow to achieve MDG
4 (Reduce child mortality).

Causes of Infant Mortality
The leading causes of Infant Mortality are birth asphyxia, pneumonia,
term birth complications, neonatal infection, diarrhea, malaria, measles
and malnutrition.
6. IMR Reports

Though India has been showing considerable progress in reducing IMR (Infant Mortality
Rate), the 2012 data reports that an IMR of 42 per 1,000 live births (Sample Registration
System, SRS 2013) was still seen.
In the Under-5 Mortality Rate (U5MR), according to SRS 2012, the IMR is 52 per 1,000 live
births.
Every year, 15.8 lakh child deaths are accounted, which globally is 20 percent in child
mortality.
7. Each Centre of Disease Control should work with the state’s regional health
authorities to assess immunization coverage in order to:
• Measure how many people are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases within
the overall population.
• Identify ‘populations’ (e.g. people living in certain communities) that have low vaccine
coverage in order to explore reasons for low coverage.

8. Monitor Coverages
91-11-41213100
It is important to monitor immunization coverages, to identify potential for outbreaks of
vaccine-preventable diseases because when coverage rates drop in a population, the
population will increase the chances of having a vaccine-preventable disease outbreak.
Monitoring can help in identifying the places where resources are need to be setup as
priority to improve the access to immunization services.
