1. SURFACE DESIGN – ARST 2710 Erin Moore
3rd Assignment – Landscape Stripe
For class on Monday, MARCH 18th, research the following and bring in the appropriate materials
(gouche, Bristol board, containers for paint, etc) to work in class for this project.
RESEARCH:
From books, magazines, photographs and various clippings in our RESOURCE ROOM choose 2
landscape images that will serve as starting points for a stripe pattern - We will research images in
class on Friday, March 8th. bring photos to class Monday, MARCH 18th. Concentrate on
atmosphere, time of day, one of the four seasons, hue, value, and proportion of color when making
your choices.
Choose one of your images to create a landscape stripe:
- Paint each paper stripe approximately 2” H and 10” W.
- You should have at least 15 stripes to represent your landscape repeat.
- Make 2 copies of your painted stripe so you can see the landscape in repeat 3 times.
- Cut strips from your photocopy to lie down along the edge of your fabric to serve as a color guide.
Use the photocopy to measure off the size of each stripe onto your fabric.
- Pin down fabric TIGHTLY and properly. Print 40” across (your stripe design will be 36”) so that
you can fold back two inches on the top and sides to stitch witchery for final.
- Measure your stripe sizes on both sides of fabric and make a small pencil mark on the edge of both
sides of your fabric. Pull masking tape across your fabric to create horizontal stripes - DO NOT
DRAW LINES WITH PENCIL OR PEN ACROSS THE SURFACE OF YOUR FABRIC –
your tape will serve as your lines.
Study your sources and using gouache paints, create a stripe pattern from the landscape images –
bring materials (paper, paints, brushes, etc.) to work in class creating these stripes. The rhythm and
scale within the final designs will be determined in large part to the proportion of different colors
used. Once you have completed a pattern, make two color copies it to see the pattern in repeat and
make adjustments to the pattern if necessary. Wrap your original painted gouche stripes in clear
plastic to protect from smudges.
2. Mon, MARCH 25rd: Individual critique of your stripe design on Bristol board paper.
MATERIALS:
A lot of masking tape in various widths
Paint (gouache)
Bristol Board (to paint your stripes). Back your painted stripes onto Bainbridge board.
Brushes, paint containers
Glue (rubber cement, double sided tape)
Fabric (white): 2 yds x 36” W on WHITE fabric. (Avoid Duck Cloth as it soaks up the pigment.

WED, APRIL 3rd: FINAL CRITIQUE: Hang your fabric vertically with landscape image (good
quality image) original gouche stripe and two photocopies. Stitch witchery the four sides and iron
