CULTURES, LEADERSHIP AND PROJECT
MANAGEMENT
How to Minimize Conflicts and Maximize
Opportunities in Multicultural Projects
INTRODUCTION
The cultural diversity within many cross-cultural projects require those managing them to adapt their project
management approach to be in harmony with the practices and behaviors of stakeholders from these cultures.
Failure to do so can lead to conflict and misunderstanding about the project purpose and structure, significant
difficulties in implementation and, in some cases, to project breakdown and litigation.
This new and fundamental course, developed by itim International and the European School of Project
Management, provides participants with a deep understanding of both national and organizational cultures and
how they interplay and influence multicultural projects. It identifies and addresses project management practices
that must be managed in order to minimize conflicts and optimize opportunities arising from the cultural mix.

METHODOLOGY
A rich mixtureof cognitive learning and reallifecase studies,as wellas analysis of the participants’ own experiences
and challenges.
PROGRAMME OVERVIEW
The first part of the course will introduce the concepts of “culture” and “cultural values” based on the extensive
empirical research initiated by Prof. Geert Hofstede. It will describe the six perspectives of organizational culture
that are influenced by (and interplay with) the national and regional cultures. This perspective, which is illustrated
through “Mental Images”, will provide participants with a clear insight into organizational behavior, as well as
helping develop strategies to minimize conflict and add value by managing the cultural diversity and capitalizing
on the opportunities it offers.
In the second part, participants will learn how to adapt their project leadership competencies to the local culture,
applying the Hofstede Dimensions Model and the six Mental Images to critical situations. This part will drill into the
specific cultural influences on project management areas and practices, such as project roles and responsibilities,
project planning, risk management, communication and reporting, delegation and accountability and project
leadership and motivation. It will provide practical strategies for managing these influences to achieve the best
possible outcomes that such cultural diversity can provide.
The final part of the course will explore the possibility of modifying or tuning the organizational culture to better
cater for projects’ performance; and to a detailed workshop by the participants on their individual strategy of
multicultural project management.
The course will end with clear guidelines for post workshop development.
