USING THE PASSIVE VOICE 
To emphasize the action and not the one who performs 
the action 
has bought a book 
when the person doing the action is unknown or does not 
exist. 
English is spoken all over the world
FORMATION OF PASSIVE VOICE 
Passive Direct object 
It is formed with the verb "To Be" + the past participle 
From Active to Passive: 
"The girl took a umbrella" 
Subject verb Direct complement 
1. Spending Direct Supplement to the subject: 
A umbrella ... 
2. Put the verb "To Be" at the time when the verb is in active + 
participle. 
A umbrella was taken ... 
3. The subject passes Agent Complement through “ BY" 
A umbrella was taken by the girl
PASSIVE INDIRECT OBJECT 
This type of passive does not exist in Spanish. It is used 
when you want to emphasize the indirect rather than 
the direct object. 
Active voice: 
I offer a job toTom

Passive voice: 
Tom is offered a job (by me)

Patient Direct Patient
VERBS WITH DOUBLE OBJECT 
Verbs that have direct and indirect object usually built with 
passive indirect object. 
ACTIVE VOICE 
My boss offered Preferred me an Important promotion. 
PASSIVE VOICE 
-An Important WAS promotion offered Preferred to me. 
(by my boss) 
-I was offered Preferred an Important promotion. 
(by my boss) 
Typical examples of verbs with two objects are:
