CITY- STATE Land Use Challenges:
To cater for:

Housing
Business
Recreational needs
Activities usually located outside the city:

Airports Power generation

Waste disposal Defence needs

                Water catchments
Singapore strategy for housing growing population was to

create HDB compact New Towns (1971)
          Self Sufficient towns
of Affordable High Rise public housing

                              82% of Singaporeans

                               95% of them own the
                                        units.
Self Sufficient Towns
   Complete with
      Schools
      Markets
      Shops
Coffee Shops
 Medical clinics
  Sports centres
       Parks
       Etc…

URA Concept Plan 2011 Key Target
•Land use and infrastructure development

•Vision for Singapore in the next 40 t0 50 years

•Improving life quality
•To cater for a bigger and older population, senior citizens to grow
older within the community.
•Land resources planning to support a growing and moving up
economy.
•Bring jobs closer to homes, and reduce
commuting time.
•Provide affordable and good
                      quality housing in popular areas.
•Increase housing density around MRT stations.
•Expand and develop leisure and water front places, with easy
and direct access.
The Park Connector Network (PCN)
of Singapore is under the management of
National Parks Board (NParks).
NParks is also responsible for the management of over 300 parks
and the streetscape (or roadside greenery).

There is a hierarchy anddiversity of parks, ranging from
large regional parks to neighbourhood parks and playgrounds, where a
spectrum of natural ecosystems co-exists with horticultural gardens.
Nparks is also responsible for the design and implementation of
the PCN, the network that connects these green spaces together
To ensure that all residents will have direct and easy access to
green open spaces and water fronts.

Opened on June 2010
“Shangri- La” meaning:
An imaginary remote paradise on earth; utopia.
A distant and secluded hideaway, usually of great beauty and peacefulness.

                                                           Shangri La Singapore
The design is a competition winning scheme and show case a good holistic
architecture. The hospital replaced a park, without loosing the green lung qualities,
and successfully became a center for the whole community.
Hospital staff is happy too…
Hospital as a community centre which attracts healthy people from the neighborhood,
to jog, eat, study, or simply enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
Hospital also promotes healthy life style.
Hospital as a community centre which takes
care of sick and healthy people as well.
Kindergarten for kids from the neighborhood.
Hospital as a community centre which invites hospital staff, patients and people from
the neighborhood, who don’t have a private garden, to do urban farming on it’s roofs.
Vision, Vision,
Vision…!

Targets should be
 Validated and Redefined,
If necessary,
And….
Mistakes can be rectified!

Hospital can become a
community centre for ALL,
and even a recreational place.
Thank You
