the sick
Games The Bowl Game:
 Fill bowl with six plum/peach stones
 Paint one side of each rock black
 Bet whether the dark or light side will face up when the bowl is banged on the
ground
 Stickball
 Similar to what is now known as field hockey
 Snow Snake
 Compete to see who can slide a long stick the farthest across the snow
 They also played lacrosse

Clothing:
 Porcupine quills
 Shells
 They made belts, pouches,
moccasins and more.
Dolls:
 Mothers gave their children faceless corn husk dolls to teach them
that the way they looked is not as important as who they are inside.
Bowls and trays:
 Made from bark from elm trees
Celebrations
The Green Corn Festival:
 One of the oldest First Nation celebrations
 Celebrated in August
 Lasted several days
 They gave offerings of tobacco and thanks to the Great Spirit
 They had dances, feasts, and games
Mid-Winter Festival:
 Six-day festival
 Celebrated at the beginning of the New Year
 Meant to give thanks to the creator
 People cleaned their houses and talked about their dreams and how they
guided them through out the year
 They visited each other, danced, ate and played games
Celebrations
Wacipi Celebration:
 Celebrated between March and September
 They sang, danced and visited family
 They performed the Hoop Dance
The hoops
represent the
never-ending
circle of life
Music
Water Drum:
Made from a hallow log
Water was placed at the bottom of the log
Rawhide was stretched over the top
Bark Rattle:
Pebbles were put inside chunks of bark
Oral Tradition
Families gathered around fire and old
people told stories
Some stories explained history, some
explained the creation of the natural
world and other demonstrated the
difference between right and wrong
behavior.
