A presentation I gave to the Boston/New England Internet of Things Meetup on June 17, 2013 about the overlooked human communications aspects of the IoT that must be dealt with if its full potential is to be realized! In particular, I argued we will need new management styles and thinking for an era in which every worker can have shared, real-time access to data that would help them do their jobs more effectively and make better decisions. Finally, I suggested we need a new kind of organizational chart -- Buckyball Management -- modeled on the buckyball molecule, in which there's no vertical hierarchy, but every person is a value-creating "node," capable of collaborating with every other person.

Due to the rapid development of information and computer technologies, nowadays we can generate, store and process big data more than ever. Consequently, organizations can benefit from this significant development as it allows them to have more data at their disposal. However, for organizations to benefit from available data, the data must be processed, extracted and converted into useful information that may lead to taking informed decision. Yet, this is easier said than done. While there is a shared understanding of big data’s power and importance, many fail to perceive the actionable steps and resources required to utilize it effectively. And this lack of strategic planning -which enables us to optimally use big data and take faster evidence-informed decisions- is one of the major impediments to successful completion of big data projects and initiatives. The aim of this presentation is setting out a roadmap to simplify the shift onto the big data journey for businesses by answering ‘How to unleash the promises of big data within an organization?’ It will address the key factors to decode big data successfully and suggests a set of main steps to do it. The key steps are drawn from multiple domains and case studies that are each deemed to constitute the strategic plan.

This is my experience of going to my first data hackathon, Govhack 2015 and what it taught me. A Hackathon is an event where you gather a heap of resources and people, form small teams and try to deliver as fully realised solution to a set theme or problem in a short intense amount of time. Normally a hackathon is focused on delivering working software, but in the case of a data hackathon you work from a heap of datasets and try to deliver something of value, that can be working software, but often is something else. For this reason non coders can participate in a data hack easily. Another difference is a hackathon normally revolves around creating some sort of business (be that profit or non-profit) idea and validating it. Data hackathons are about understanding and realising value from data, and that value can often just be delivering better access to the information the data represents.
