University of York and Widening Participation


   The University of York has a strong reputation for inclusivity and the
    University encourages applications from a diversity of backgrounds.


   There are high standards of fairness and transparency in the
    admissions process.


   All the staff involved understand the aims and principles of widening
    participation and how to apply these, including the removal of unfair
    barriers to entry.

10.30am          Welcome to the University of York and Introduction to the Day 
            
10.40am    Note Taking and Writing  
           (Being able to write down your ideas logically, concisely, accurately and 
           completely is essential for students to demonstrate understanding of a 
           subject and the ability to use the knowledge learnt. This session will look at 
           what is expected of students in their writing, particularly focussed on 
           essays. Students will be introduced to some simple but effective ideas for 
           improving their writing and have a go at different exercises that emphasise 
           key components for getting the message across) 
            
11.40am    Break 
 
11.50am    Referencing and Plagiarism/ Academic Integrity 
           (Being able to reference is an important aspect to any piece of academic 
           writing, whether at sixth form or at university. This session will look at what 
           is meant by referencing and academic integrity.)

1.15pm     Mini Campus Tour 
            
1.45pm     Research and Evaluating Information 
           (This will include a hands‐on session in a PC classroom. Students will be 
           introduced to some freely available academic resources – including both 
           websites and e‐books as well as some subscription resources that University 
           libraries have access to. The students will be asked to evaluate some 
           materials and consider whether they would be suitable for a piece of 
           academic work. Students will have the opportunity to search our collection 
           for resources covering their own area of interest)

What is the Extended Project?

   The Extended Project is a qualification year
    12 or 13 students can take in addition to
    their A’levels.


   The qualification counts for UCAS points.


   The qualification develops research skills,
    referencing and writing skills.

University of York and Widening Participation  The University of York has a strong reputation for inclusivity and the University encourages applications from a diversity of backgrounds.  There are high standards of fairness and transparency in the admissions process.  All the staff involved understand the aims and principles of widening participation and how to apply these, including the removal of unfair barriers to entry.
  • 4. Developing Independent Learning  Collaboration between a number of University departments  Widening Participation Office  Student Admissions  Learning Enhancement Team  Library and Archives  Aim was to help students bridge the gap between further and higher education  Promote the University of York to students in our ‘Schools Network’.

Typical DIL programme     Developing Independent Learning Programme  Monday 28 June 2010     10.15am  Arrive and Refreshments    10.30am    Welcome to the University of York and Introduction to the Day        10.40am  Note Taking and Writing   (Being able to write down your ideas logically, concisely, accurately and  completely is essential for students to demonstrate understanding of a  subject and the ability to use the knowledge learnt. This session will look at  what is expected of students in their writing, particularly focussed on  essays. Students will be introduced to some simple but effective ideas for  improving their writing and have a go at different exercises that emphasise  key components for getting the message across)        11.40am  Break    11.50am  Referencing and Plagiarism/ Academic Integrity  (Being able to reference is an important aspect to any piece of academic  writing, whether at sixth form or at university. This session will look at what  is meant by referencing and academic integrity.)  12.50pm  Lunch    1.15pm  Mini Campus Tour        1.45pm  Research and Evaluating Information  (This will include a hands‐on session in a PC classroom. Students will be  introduced to some freely available academic resources – including both  websites and e‐books as well as some subscription resources that University  libraries have access to. The students will be asked to evaluate some  materials and consider whether they would be suitable for a piece of  academic work. Students will have the opportunity to search our collection  for resources covering their own area of interest)    2.45pm  Library Challenge      3.20pm  Round up       3.30pm Depart
  • 7. What is the Extended Project?  The Extended Project is a qualification year 12 or 13 students can take in addition to their A’levels.  The qualification counts for UCAS points.  The qualification develops research skills, referencing and writing skills.
