Location-Based Service

 Location-Based Service (LBS) is a software application for
a mobile device that requires knowledge about where the
    mobile device is located
 LBS employs accurate, real-time positioning to connect
    users to points of interest

First InDOG Doctoral Conference, 29th October - 1st November 2012, Olomouc
Location-Based Service

 LBS are included in
 services to identify a location of a person or object, such as
discovering the nearest banking cash machine or the
whereabouts of a friend or employee
 parcel tracking and vehicle tracking services
 advertising directed at customers based on their current
        location
     weather services
     location-based games

First InDOG Doctoral Conference, 29th October - 1st November 2012, Olomouc
Social Networks

 Social structure made up of individuals/organizations
connected by one or more specific types of
interdependency, such as friendship, common interests,
    and shared knowledge

First InDOG Doctoral Conference, 29th October - 1st November 2012, Olomouc
Location-Based Social Network

 Adding a location to an existing social network so that
people in the social structure can share location-
    embedded information
 New social structure made up of individuals connected by
the interdependency derived from their locations in the
physical world as well as their location-tagged media
content, such as photos, video, and texts

First InDOG Doctoral Conference, 29th October - 1st November 2012, Olomouc
Mobile Social Network

 Social network where users can connect with another one through
    their mobile phone and/or tablet
 The increasing availability of open smartphone platforms such as Apple
iPhones and Google Android phones caused that mobile device users
use mobile applications to share their current location with their
friends via Location-Based Social Networks (LBSN)
 The process of sharing current location has became known as
    “checking - in”
 Check –in can be gained in one of two ways:
 via an SMS text message,- manualy
 via mobile application - automatically determine a user’s current
location by leveraging the power of a number of location determination
       technologies

        the places that they go
 In April 2009 Brightkite was acquired by mobile social network Limbo
 Gowalla (2007 – 2012)
     Check-in via mobil aplication in „Spots“
 Users got virtual items, which could change to another with other users
 Users could add new Spots or Trips
 Google Latitude (2009)
 To shere location with friends

 Users choose automatically push their check-in messages to
Twitter, which provides a public API to search and download
    these messages

First InDOG Doctoral Conference, 29th October - 1st November 2012, Olomouc

Problems

 Check-ins coordinates are coordinates of the place, where
the user checked-in, not coordinates of venue
 GPS accuracy

First InDOG Doctoral Conference, 29th October - 1st November 2012, Olomouc
Problem

 For 1 building/place can be more venues
 1 shop center includes more small shops
 1 university includes more departmens

 More name for 1 venue, e.g. Railway Station Olomouc
    (Železniční stanice Olomouc-Hlavní nádraží, Hlavní
nádraží, Olomouc Hlavní nádraží, ČD Centrum)
