Session Presented @IndicThreads Cloud Computing Conference, Pune, India ( http://u10.indicthreads.com ) ------------ One of the big hurdles for an enterprise to move to the cloud is the fear of getting locked into a specific cloud implementation. This is one of the big reasons apart from security of data that keeps most of the enterprises out of the cloud space. Currently each vendor provides their unique set of API to interact with their Cloud services. This mandates a need to recode and refactor when moving from one cloud provider to the other. jClouds is a multi cloud framework which allows connection to multiple clouds such as Amazon, VMWare, Azure, and Rackspace. jClouds provides portable abstractions for cloud specific features, thus allowing the application to move from one cloud vendor to the other with relative ease. jClouds also had a simulators to operate in restricted environments like Google App Engine and Android. Unit testing and mocking is made easy through stub connections which simulate the cloud. Why does application Modernization in the form of decomposing monoliths result in so many microservices ? Why has microservices become the default deployment model for applications. In this talk we will add some sanity to the process of constructing microservices and provide guidelines and design heuristics on structuring microservices. We will look at life after running microservices architectures in production and learn from the mistakes committed over the past five years. We will analyze real life systems on the criteria for consolidating microservices into monoliths or moduliths based on technical and business heuristics as illustrated In [4]. The techniques - a combination of mapping microservices to core technical attributes [2] reduced by affinity mapping and business domain context distillation [3] - have emerged from working with a number of customers where the value of microservices has not been realized despite leveraging Domain Driven Design. It sure did the work, but has lot of pain points from getting an idea to implement it in terms of map reduce. Did you wonder how life will be much simple if you had to code like doing collection operations and hence being transparent* to its distributed nature? Did you want/hope for more performant/low latency jobs? Well, seems like you are in luck. In this talk, we will be covering a different way to do MapReduce kind of operations without being just limited to map and reduce, yes, we will be talking about Apache Spark. We will compare and contrast Spark programming model with Map Reduce. We will see where it shines, and why to use it, how to use it. We’ll be covering aspects like testability, maintainability, conciseness of the code, and some features like iterative processing, optional in-memory caching and others. We will see how Spark, being just a cluster computing engine, abstracts the underlying distributed storage, and cluster management aspects, giving us a uniform interface to consume/process/query the data. We will explore the basic abstraction of RDD which gives us so many awesome features making Apache Spark a very good choice for your big data applications. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
