– Forms of assessment
– Endorsing service providers

SAQA through the NQF Act has awarded LIASA

– Professional Librarian
– LIS related qualifications

• Manage CPD

How is it going to work?
Examples only!
Scope of application:
• “The CPD programme applies to all LIS
professional and practitioner members who are
registered with LIASA. The requirement to engage
in professional development activities begins on
the date one becomes registered with LIASA.”
Exemptions:
• “Only students, exam candidates or members in
training as well as retirees are exempted from the
CPD activities.”
“It is compulsory for any person registered with
LIASA under the following Professional
Designated membership to accumulate a total
of 20 CPD points for a period of 12 months.”
Activities that doesn’t qualify for CPD points
“Not all activities will qualify for CPD ratings; there
are however, certain activities which are part of the
process of the CPD points but are not actual CPD.”
“The following activities will not qualify for CPD:
• Attending a meeting and preparing for the meeting.
• Preparing for the conference, workshops, and seminar
• Mentoring/ supervision activities which is not relevant
to the LIS profession”
Requirements:
• “In order to meet the requirements of the CPD
programme, you will be required to:
– Maintain a written record of CPD activities.
– Report CPD hours annually, and
– Submit a detailed activity record on request”
• It is important to ensure that you have a
detailed activity record include the following
critical information:
– the date(s) that the activity occurred
– a description/ title of the activity
– the organiser/ provider of the activity
– the CPD category in which the activity belongs
– the number of hours (duration) spent on the
activity

LIASA Professional Body Status

  • 7. • Promote public understanding of the profession • Encourage social responsibility • Promote pride in the association • Promote the protection of the public • Facilitate access to data related • Support the development of a national career advise system • Encourage the development and implementation of CPD
  • 8. What is a Professional Body? • The NQF Act 67 of 2008 defines: The NQF Act 67 of 2008 defines: “Professional Body” means any body of expert practitioners in an occupational field, and includes an occupational body What is a Professional Body?
  • 9. Criteria for the recognition of Professional Bodies
  • 10. • Legally constituted entity with the necessary human and financial resources • Governed either by a statute, charter or a constitution Constituted • Protect public in relation to the services provided by its members Protect public • Develop • Award • Monitor • Revoke • In terms of own rules, legislation and/or international conventions Professional designations • Publish a Code of conduct • Operate a mechanism for investigating members that contravene the code of conduct Code of Conduct • Set criteria for CPD • Promote CPD • Monitor CPD CPD • Submit a list of members in a form acceptable to SAQA Data

  • 13. What is a Professional Body? • The NQF Act 67 of 2008 defines: The NQF Act 67 of 2008 defines: “Professional Designation” means a title or status conferred by a Professional Body in recognition of a person’s expertise and/or right to practice in an occupational field. What is a Designation?

  • 19. • Database to the NLRD – SAQA: “very aware of the dire consequences if [we] contravene POPI Act” • Register a second designation • PB Committees – Revise CPD policy – Forms of assessment – Endorsing service providers • Award designations
  • 20. SAQA through the NQF Act has awarded LIASA the right to: • Set and ensure standards for: – Professional Librarian – LIS related qualifications • Same competencies • Manage CPD
  • 22. Immediate: • Update of and upload to the LIASA membership database • International qualifications • Draft CPD documentation for the members • Professional Development Plans
  • 23. Long term: Participation in CPD - • Capacitated and empowered • Best LIS services • High quality and standards • Relevant and current knowledge • Same competencies for the various job titles
  • 24. How is it going to work? Examples only!
  • 25. Scope of application: • “The CPD programme applies to all LIS professional and practitioner members who are registered with LIASA. The requirement to engage in professional development activities begins on the date one becomes registered with LIASA.” Exemptions: • “Only students, exam candidates or members in training as well as retirees are exempted from the CPD activities.”
  • 26. “It is compulsory for any person registered with LIASA under the following Professional Designated membership to accumulate a total of 20 CPD points for a period of 12 months.”

Activities that doesn’t qualify for CPD points “Not all activities will qualify for CPD ratings; there are however, certain activities which are part of the process of the CPD points but are not actual CPD.” “The following activities will not qualify for CPD: • Attending a meeting and preparing for the meeting. • Preparing for the conference, workshops, and seminar • Mentoring/ supervision activities which is not relevant to the LIS profession”
  • 31. Requirements: • “In order to meet the requirements of the CPD programme, you will be required to: – Maintain a written record of CPD activities. – Report CPD hours annually, and – Submit a detailed activity record on request”
  • 32. • It is important to ensure that you have a detailed activity record include the following critical information: – the date(s) that the activity occurred – a description/ title of the activity – the organiser/ provider of the activity – the CPD category in which the activity belongs – the number of hours (duration) spent on the activity
