Why is venture capital so rare outside a few key cities like Silicon Valley, Boston, New York? Why is business success so rare? To understand the dynamics of success at a company, city or country level you must avoid the trite, simplistic or single threaded answers. Business and regional Venture Capital success are highly complex systems which are based on probability and statistics more than science and determinism. While you can improve your odds by being regionally focused and following the highest probability patterns it does not assure success. Success is a rich fabric of ideas, insights, behaviors, circumstances, economic and technical tipping points combined with just shear luck or fortune.

Girls in Technology (GIT) Mentor-Protege Program in Virginia held its fourth session on February 11, 2015. The session topic was on Innovation: Embracing Fear and Learning to Fail. The GIT feature demo was on robotics. What would we do if we knew that we could not fail? We all have passions, goals, ambitions, dreams and ideas. But why aren't we pursuing them? The #1 reason why dreams die before we even try is because we are afraid of failure. We think that the path from great idea to massive success is one straight path. However, GIT Girls learned that success has no one straight path. There are many challenges, obstacles, and failures along the way, but we mustn't quit. We must learn and improve from our mistakes. We want our students to succeed, but if failures are part of the success equation, we must also teach them how to fail.
