This is a self-led coaching session that is based on actual confidence
coaching sessions and information contained in The Caterpillar to Butterfly
Self-Esteem Workbook. Use them together build your knowledge base and
give you the tools that are needed to build your confidence and increase
your self-esteem. They will help keep you motivated and encourage you to
move forward in life.
Please note that our visual presentations and printed information are not
intended to replace any professional help you may be receiving. Use them
in conjunction with your current services and/or programs.

People have always had plans and
dreams but the theory of goals didn’t
begin until the 1960’s.
Then one doctor began to notice that
people who worked towards specific
plans, dreams and goals were
motivated to accomplish them and
became successful in their lives.
GOALS ARE IMPORTANT
 READ PAGE 56 – 57 AND DO THE EXERCISE
• Goals bring your thoughts together
• Can be started in any life stage
• Can be set for any length of time
• Can be simple or complex
GOALS GIVE
PURPOSE TO LIFE
Do you go through life
aimlessly, doing the same
thing every day and never
make any changes?
Many of us don’t even
realize how much potential
we have.
Goals will help us make
necessary changes so we
can move forward in life.

The first step is to create a
DEFINITE goal.
Just thinking about what you
want to do, isn’t enough to
motivate you.
Your thoughts need to be clearly
defined and written down in a
step by step plan.
D.R.A.W YOUR GOALS -
Definite
 READ PAGE 58 AND DO THE EXERCISE
Making a promise holds more power than just
thinking about it. When you make a promise:
You plan on doing something
You plan on not doing something
Your thoughts have been put into action
This means there is a much better chance that:
You will follow through
 You will keep your promise
 You will reach your goal
SETTING GOALS ARE
MAKING PROMISES

 Eat healthy
 Exercise
 Drink water
 Get enough sleep
 Be nice to people
 Tell myself I am
special
Writing down a small daily promise that
is possible to keep, will help you get into
practice for creating a larger goal plan.
On page 59, there is a sample of a daily
promise sheet with instructions on how
to fill it in.
Create one of your own or use the
template on page 79. Use the list on
page 60 to help you find appropriate
words.
The more you do this exercise, the faster
you will improve your physical, mental,
emotional and spiritual state.
The next step is to make sure your goals are
realistic. It is good to stretch your abilities but
also necessary to make sure you can actually
accomplish what you want to do.
Some goals may sound great but they may be
physically impossible for you, like being a horse
jockey at 250 lbs.
Other goals might sound impossible but when
you really do research, they might just be within
reach. For example, opening a coffee shop with
no money can happen if you have a solid
business plan and a good location.
Be honest, do the research and take a risk!

Now you need to make sure you are able to
assess your goals. If you can measure your
progress, it will keep you motivated and
allow you to see where you are going.
Update your goals regularly and make any
necessary changes. Make sure you celebrate
your successes, no matter how small they
are.

 READ PAGE 63 AND DO THE EXERCISE
Timing is very important when working towards a
goal. If you can’t see any end in sight, it can be hard
to keep going.
Taking things a day at a time is the best way to go.
Instead of saying, “I will get this done by the
end of the week or I will stop this bad
habit by next year” say instead, “I will
complete this part today or I won’t do
this bad habit today”.
Commit to fulfilling a daily goal every day, especially
if you are a procrastinator.

Failure is a normal part of life.
NOBODY goes through life without failure.
Successful people learn from their failures and keep
going.
Sometimes we believe that we are the only ones in
the world who fail and then we beat ourselves up
constantly.
Sometimes other people have convinced us that
failure is bad and this is wrong!
 READ PAGES 65 – 66 AND DO THE EXERCISES
We should always keep going even when
things get difficult. Life is not supposed to be
easy. There will always be problems and
challenges.
We need to learn how to fail successfully and
not fall apart when things don’t work out as
we planned.
Never make excuses or blame other people.
This will hurt you personally the most and
keep you stuck in the past.
Take responsibility for your own actions and
keep moving forward.

Goals always have a beginning
but some goals can be ongoing
like improving attitudes or
building character.
Even goals that have a specific
time frame can be reached and
then started again with a new
deadline.
