1. Project “Nós Propomos!”
Citizenship, Sustainability and Innovation in Geographical
Education
“The growth of Sertã:
Meetings and missings of regional and urban planning”
In Geography class and under the project “Nós Propomos!”, we have sought
solutions for the problems in the streets, village and municipality of Sertã. The
land-planning of the territory of this village has not anticipated long-term
changes and has evolved in a random fashion lacking a whole and integrated
perspective. As an example, streets, sidewalks and gardens are built and,
within a short period of time, new infrastructures are needed, leading to the
destruction of these same new spaces.

FRAMEWORK
For several months, we have walked the village streets, talked to the different
space users, conducted inquiries and interviews, made bibliographic research
and used SIGs. We have then reached conclusions and outlined a few
proposals.
METHODOLY
A development study is needed on a regional and local scale, which envisions
the village and municipality of Sertã, defines orientations that are consensual
after public debate and establishes long-term goals and strategies (for a
period of 20 years, for instance).
This study must prioritize particular questions:
- What village do we want for our children?
- What are the needed infrastructures for a predominantly aged population?
To realise this study, people must be heard and public debates must be
conducted in order to structure an integrated development plan capable of
meeting the population requirements regarding topics from education to
health, including housing and culture, without neglecting the general well-
being and life quality of the population.
