ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
First, our team members would like to express our sincere gratitude to
Mr Shankar for his guidance and constant encouragement throughout this
course, and also giving this research assignment as well. This project had led us
to do a lot of research that we could learn more about the concepts we had
chosen, which are schema, social learning, bystander effect, physiological
needs and dispositional attribution. At last, we would like to thank all of our
group members of their cooperation, hardworking attitude and making an all-
out effort to complete this project.

INTRODUCTION
At the beginning of this semester, we were divided into a group of four
students for assignment 3. For this assignment, we were required to conduct a
social psychology conceptual video clip and a presentation for the video.
The objectives of this assignment are to allow students to demonstrate
implementation of social psychology concepts to practical environments and
enhance teamwork ability and leadership. This project also allows students to
recognise and identify the connections among concepts and perspectives
within social psychology and with other disciplines. Besides, students will be
able to apply critical thinking in real world experiences.
This project is divided into two parts. Part 1 is about making up a video
clip by incorporating the concepts we learnt in class and a written report of the
clip. Part 2 is about presenting the video clip to class and conducting a group
presentation that should be approximately 20 minutes.

METHODS
(A)APPARATUS/MATERIALS
Camera: We need a camera to record our video clip. A DSLR camera, which
belongs to one of our group members, is used. A cameraman is needed to
hold the camera to record it.
Script: A script is needed to make a video. We have written it out and follow
what we had written when we are recording. This makes sure our recording
is on track.
Handbag: A handbag is needed to show that the boy is robbing.
Book and Pen: These are the main components in this video clip. They show
the schema of people on stealing. People will think that the little boy is
stealing the handbag for money, but actually he just wants a pen and a
book to study.

(B)PROCEDURES
1. Confirming the concept
A meeting was conducted to discuss about the concept we needed in
the video. The concepts we had chosen are schema, social learning,
bystander effect, physiological needs and dispositional attribution.
2. Planning a video
After we had done our research, we got some ideas on how we should
plan a video that consists of the five concepts that we had chosen. Then,
we prepared a script for the video. We had also chosen the places where
we were going to shoot the video, which is within the area of the Syopz
Mall.
3. Shooting the video
We gathered at the Syopz Mall and started to shoot the video after class.
Although there were many people looking at us, we still continued to
take our recording.

DISCUSSION
(A) Concepts
There are 5 concepts used in this video clip. They are schema, social
learning, bystander effect, physiological needs and dispositional
attribution.
1. Schema is a cognitive framework that is automatically created by our
own. It guides us to understanding the world. It can exist for people,
places, events or others. Schemas are formed on our basis of
experience. In this video clip, we had shown people generally would
give a framework towards a robber to snatch a victim’s money,
whereas in our context, we were conveying a different case in which
the boy is actually stealing a book and a pen to study.
2. Social Learning is about individuals learn their behaviour by observing
others’ behaviours. In this video clip, people steal in front of him. This
makes him to feel that stealing is not either morally wrong or an
illegal action. So when he hopes to have a pen and a book to study, in
turn he behaves in a similar manner, which is stealing from others.
Social Psychology Research Report
Page 7
3. Bystander Effect occurs when the presence of others hinders an
individual from intervening in an emergency situation. In this video
clip, although there are many people around, no one is willing to lend
a hand. They think that it is none of their business and it might
because they do not know the lady.
4. Physiological Needs are the things necessary to our basic survival,
such as food, water, rest and others. The boy in the video clip needs a
pen and a book to study, so he robs the lady as he finds she has those
things that he is longing for.
5. Dispositional Attribution is where we assume that the cause of an
action is due to a person’s internal characteristics. In the video clip,
people think that the lady robbed by a little boy is due to her
carelessness.

(B) Summary of the video clip
Scene 1
Venue : Taylor’s Old Town White Coffee
One day, a woman had her free time break at Old Town White
Coffee. She took her pen and book out, and started to draw something on
it. After a while, she got a phone call from her friend to ask her out. After
paying the bill, she put her things into her handbag and went to meet her
friend.
Scene 2
Venue : Outside Taylor’s Old Town White Coffee
As she was going out from the shop, she did not realise that there
was a little boy staring at her. He quickly snatched her handbag and ran
away. She was very shocked. When she realised what had happened, she
chased after the little boy. There were many people around but they didn’t
help her out to chase or stop the boy. They just stood there and talked
about her.

Page 9
Scene 3
Venue : Staircase beside Taylor’s Foodcourt
She looked around for the little boy. She found her handbag at the
staircase and her things inside the handbag were all dropped out. She checked
her things; nothing had gone, except her pen and a book. She saw the little boy
at the staircase holding her pen to write something. She was shocked because
she thought that the boy would steal her money instead of her stationery.

CONCLUSION
Throughout this assignment, we had a better understanding on social
psychology concepts and known how to apply them into our life. We also
learnt how to shoot a video and act it out our scenarios. Although acting was a
little bit hard for us, we had tried our best to act naturally. At last, we managed
to finish our video.
In conclusion, this was a very good experience for us. Besides gaining
more understanding on social psychology, we also enjoyed the fun of video
shooting.
