• CONCEPT :
o It was a slow and profound transformation that affected
all economic and social sectors.
o The peasants leave the land and they go to cities in search of
work, manual works of the artisans are replaced by machines in
factories
• CAUSE :
o Improvements in the agriculture
o The growth of the population
o Technological development
3. some characterIstIcs of
the perIod
• It is a period where the music is very important.
• There are Universal Exhibitions (Paris, London...)
• Museums are opened.
• Relationships between bourgeoises and workers always had
problems.
4. Society organization
• Bourgeoisie:they have right to participate in politics. They lived
in neighbourhoods away from the noise and they created private
clubs where members could only access.
• Small or middle urban class: landlords, doctors, lawyers, etc.
The could take positions in business administration. They liked
pubs where they talked about lots of things.
• Lower class or working class: proletarians, a new group
that depends on a salary. They lived in slums located in a
disorderly way around the factories.
5. the BourgeoiSie
• It was consolidated as a new social class, with a lot of economic
power and with big interests of taking part in the political
activity.
• They lived in neighbourhoods outside the city.
• Like aristocracy they liked doing parties in their living-rooms.
• Opera was the main important stage for them. It was so
important to see like being seen.
6. the WorkerS
• The workers were known as proletariat that grew together with
the growth of the industrial activity.
• They depended on a salary.
• They worked until 16 hours per day.
• They earned little money.
• Children had to work.
• An accident or illness led them to the misery.
• They lived in slums located in a disorderly way around
the factories.
8. The cloThes
We could consider fashion as a frivolous pleasure that reaffirms the vanity
and social classes divided according to the dress.
• BOURGEOISIE
o Bustle Style (second half of XIX century)
o La Belle Epoque: Transition nineteenth and twentieth centuries
9. • WORKERS
o Often, they were dressed in rags
o Men used to wear trousers, shirt, vest and cap.
o Women used to wear long skirt, shirt and a kind of scarf
