Pigeonpea research initiatives in the Philippines
1. Pigeonpea Research Initiatives in the Philippines
Summary: Pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh] is an important food legume in the world. In the Philippines it is a
minor crop and known as kadyos or kardis. At present, pigeonpea is cultivated on 2,000 hectares in the rainfed areas of
the Philippines. It is perennial plant tolerant to drought and can grow under poor soils with a long picking period. In the
Philippines, a series of exploratory trials were conducted since 1975 using ICRISAT varieties.

Philippine pigeonpea landrace.
Pigeonpea landraces are invariably grown for vegetable purpose on a
homestead, on roadsides, on rainfed uplands after rice, and in the
highlands where farmers practice the slash and burn system of cultivation.
