ICDE a taste of to morrow
1. ICDE – a Taste of
Tomorrow
Moscow, Russia and Curitiba, Brazil 2014
Gard Titlestad, Secretary General
International Council For Open and Distance Education
2. • Why a taste of tomorrow?
– ICDE´s focus – what is underway?
– And: What are issues of our concern?
– More important: Why are we optimistic, and
about what?
• So, What could we do today, to improve our
stakes for tomorrow?
3. • To be the leading global network for making quality learning
accessible throughout the world using open, distance, flexible
and online education.
• To connect institutions, organisations and professionals from
across the globe so that they can share ideas, resources and best
practices, partner on major projects and advocate together.
• To be the official partner of UNESCO, that shares that agency’s
key aim – the attainment of quality education for all
• ICDE believes that in pursuing education as a universal right, the
needs of the learner must be central.
• To organize members in all regions of the world

Why is ICDE here?
4. Objectives - ICDE
• Is a membership-driven networked community of practice
focused on access to quality education for all
• Is aligned with the emerging, comprehensive development
goals and works for all nations and systems, public and private
• Facilitates members and partners to take lead in
methodologies, pedagogy and technology for open, distance,
flexible, online education and elearning
• While closely associated with open and distance learning, its
focus is on quality, access and learning outcomes through a
lens of equity

ICDE Chairs in Open Educational Resources - call for
proposals from the Global South
• ICDE is considering the extension of the network of
ICDE Chairs in Open Educational Resources (OER).
• The network, where possible, works in collaboration
with UNESCO and existing UNESCO Chairs in OER.
• Deadline proposals:
15 October 2014
7. ICDE upcoming events
The theme will be scrutinized by keynotes, workshops and
interactive discussions. ICDE has many types of member
institutions, Open Universities, conventional universities
with flexible education offerings, distance teaching
institutes and many more. What we all have in common is
that we are challenged by the rapid changes caused by
the different aspects of open education: Open as free, as
the O in the MOOCs, Open as easy access and affordable,
Open as no formal requirement for enrolment, Open as
Open Content as in Open Access and Open Educational
Resources, Open as freedom of choice to learn when you
want, where you want and at your own pace.
