players, or even “Smart” TVs themselves.”

of the content itself. The provider may

redistribution of the content.

US Based Providers
Netflix
• Established in 1999 as a subscription based digital distribution service
• by 2009 it was offering a collection of 100,000 titles on DVD and had surpassed 10
million subscribers
• Netflix expanded it’s digital streaming service and in 2012 to include “Original
Programming”
HULU
• Established in 2007. Offers ad-supported on-demand streaming video of TV
shows, movies, webisodes and other new media from
NBC, Fox, ABC, CBS, Nickelodeon, and other networks.
• Free and premium subscription models.
Amazon
• Established in 2006. Offers a number of television shows and films for rental and
purchase
• Unlimited streaming on certain titles for Amazon Prime subscribers.
