In Euskadi, there are many organisations and institutions that have been working on social
innovation as an institutional, economic, social and techno-cultural model. At the same time, within
the EU area, the exchange of social innovation policies and projects between states, regions, cities
and boroughs is being strengthened. In this context, Donostia-San Sebastian, within its wider
interactive geographic framework (Gipuzkoa, CAV, etc.), presents itself as a city in a privileged
position to both stimulate and become a European connecting point in the social innovation field.
Social innovation, despite not being a new concept, now presents itself as an alternative to the lack
of public response to collective problems. The final outcome is that new ways to resolve or at least
moderate social problems, old and new, must be found. In many cases, this results in proposals for
social self-organisation, collective initiative, enterprise, social innovation of a very diverse, pluralistic
nature, which therefore have the potential to enhance our territory and the network of organisations
and agents that inspire with their activities. This is the case of the institutions and organisations
invited to this seminar, all of which carry out great work in the interest of extending the social
innovation model.
Nevertheless, despite the intense activity carried out by agents in this area, social innovation is not
yet at the centre of institutional policies and organisational priorities of key agents in our midst. In
addition, there are many other agents working in this field but also giving the impression (right or
wrong) that they do so in a rather incoherent manner, thus resulting in a subsequent loss of impact
on the organisational network and on the territory as a whole. And this does not take into account
the waste of know-how and of the possible interactions that may exist between the agents
themselves.
In conclusion, far from placing the emphasis on the institutional support programmes which,
although necessary, should not be an end in themselves, this seminar invites agents who are active
in social innovation within our surrounding area, to reach a common strategy in relation to the
specific actions and projects that are currently being developed. This seminar aims to be a common
and strategic meeting place, to reflect on the activity of social innovation in our territory, identifying
the determining factors that may act as an obstacle and also the possible strategies that strengthen
the sector as well as each of the agents.
