5. Preferred reading <3
- The headline states "We loved you ma'am" where the
"we" connotes everybody loved her and reinforcing
the ideologies of royalists.
- The purple banner is a change from their usual red
banner, purple being the royal colour, which yet again
shows their respect for the queen and royals.
- 36-page tribute again showing the preferred reading
of support and love for the queen. Suggests they just
assume their demographic will want to pay for a 36-
page tribute to the queen.
- The big black and white image of her covering the
cover shows the preferred reading of sadness (no
colours) and respect as well as her importance.
6. Negotiated Reading
• People may feel sympathetic over her death
while not being a royalist however will also
feel 36 pages and ignoring all other news is
very excessive especially as there is still other
stuff happening such as the war in Ukraine or
the cost-of-living crisis.
• Perhaps seeing it as a distraction from all the
other stuff happening.
7. Oppositional reading
• Some people may view the paper and not feel
sympathetic. They might feel like the Sun is
just kissing her feet and people who are anti-
royalists may be annoyed at them
commemorating someone their taxes go to.
• 36 pages in a news article may feel like they
are ignoring other news happening.
