Violent films make people commit
violent acts.
Is this statement reductive?
The effects that films & TV have on
audiences is a complex debate.
Politicians, researchers and the press
are all a part of that debate.
What motivation could there be for this debate
for each of these?
As are the victims and perpetrators of
crime.
There is some evidence of a
relationship between violent media
and increased aggression in young
people.
As children grow up they learn
behaviours and ‘normal’ behaviour
from a range of stimuli
• Parents
• Social group
• Cultural norms
• Media
• Etc….
In 2003 a decade long study into watching
violent media whilst growing up concluded:
"Every violent TV show increases a
little-bit the likelihood of a child
growing up to behave more
aggressively."
But can we truly blame the media as
the cause of violence (effect)?
Does watching violent films
desensitise us?

Are we naturally a violent species?
The human condition is
complex.
Could the reasons we have for
committing violent acts be just
as complex?
Do you think media is the only
factor that influences people
to act in different ways?

I want you to research the relationship between:
Movies > Violence
Cause > Effect
By the end of today, you
• MUST be able to research the relationship
between movies and violence.
• SHOULD be able to form an argument about the
relationship between movies and violence.
• COULD form a balanced argument about the
relationship between movies and violence, using
examples to prove your points.
Task 1
I want you to research the debate about the
relationship between movies, violence and
aggression.
You will have to use this research and come up
with your own opinion about the relationship,
answering the following question:
“Violent films make people act
violently. Movie-makers have a moral
obligation to tone down their violence
to save society.”

  • 8. Violent films make people commit violent acts. Is this statement reductive?
  • 9. The effects that films & TV have on audiences is a complex debate.
  • 10. Politicians, researchers and the press are all a part of that debate. What motivation could there be for this debate for each of these?
  • 11. As are the victims and perpetrators of crime.
  • 12. There is some evidence of a relationship between violent media and increased aggression in young people.
  • 13. As children grow up they learn behaviours and ‘normal’ behaviour from a range of stimuli • Parents • Social group • Cultural norms • Media • Etc….
  • 14. In 2003 a decade long study into watching violent media whilst growing up concluded: "Every violent TV show increases a little-bit the likelihood of a child growing up to behave more aggressively."
  • 15. But can we truly blame the media as the cause of violence (effect)?

  • 17. Do movies teach us that violence is an acceptable solution to our problems?
  • 18. Are we naturally a violent species?
  • 19. The human condition is complex. Could the reasons we have for committing violent acts be just as complex? Do you think media is the only factor that influences people to act in different ways?
  • 20. Today I want you to research the relationship between: Movies > Violence Cause > Effect
  • 21. By the end of today, you • MUST be able to research the relationship between movies and violence. • SHOULD be able to form an argument about the relationship between movies and violence. • COULD form a balanced argument about the relationship between movies and violence, using examples to prove your points.
  • 22. Task 1 I want you to research the debate about the relationship between movies, violence and aggression. You will have to use this research and come up with your own opinion about the relationship, answering the following question:
  • 23. “Violent films make people act violently. Movie-makers have a moral obligation to tone down their violence to save society.”
