This is an April 1916 Havana presentation stressing that Cuba has the technical skills to make major digital advances in the Internet ecosystem, and that the lack of political will to "unleash" Cuban abilities (mainly among its underemployed youth) is a major risk to Cuba's future. It can muster the political will to ride the digital wave, or sit back and be swamped by a tsunami of foreign oligopolies in league with emerging Cuban oligarchs. It is the tragedy of a country with the abilities being shackled by a lack or (or perverse) political will that will betray even the goals of the Cuban Revolution.

The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to unify everything in our world under a common infrastructure, giving us not only control of things around us, but also keeping us informed about the state of things. Currently the IoT affects both the daily lives of all of us and the management of business processes, becoming a considerable asset for the world market. This work is focussed on the analysis of IoT technologies state of the art and theirs trends in South Tyrol after 20 years of growth and expansion. The analisys is based on the bibliographic study of existing technologies both considering the market and the research context, through the systematic review of official company reports, comparisons with experts in the field, academic research documents and archives available online. The main objective of this work is to provide an overview of IoT technologies state of the art and their application in everyday life. In addition, the study also aims to give to the actors in the sector an idea of how the IoT technologies will progress in South Tyrol.

It requires bare minimum investment and equipment and efficiently provides connectivity to the third world countries. Developed by MIT Media Lab researchers. It is an ad hoc network. It uses wireless technology to provide asynchronous digital connectivity. It marks the beginning of a road to universal broadband connectivity.

This publication describes some of the research highlights achieved in the focus areas of the Open Smart Spaces spearhead programme 2009–2012: interoperability, smartness, and natural interaction. Interoperability between devices, software and other resources is essential for the emergence of smart spaces. The different levels of interoperability are discussed together with the importance of a common language for the devices. Semantic interoperability in resource limited devices is also elaborated and an implementation example is given. Context recognition has taken significant technical steps and matured from laboratory to real world applications during last couple of years. This development from recognising user’s physical activity – sitting, walking, running – to more elaborate life pattern analysis is discussed. Development of VTT Node, a wireless sensing and processing device bringing distributed intelligence into industrial condition monitoring is explained. An overview of how existing near field communication antennas and circuits can double for the purpose of wireless charging is given. Finally, the interesting possibilities given by augmented and mixed reality and 3D cameras are introduced.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
