Hi everyone, many thanks for coming to my talk. My name is Patrick Meier and my mission over the past six years has been to create linkages between the humanitarian community and the technology space. Humanitarian organizations are still lagging far far behind in technology adoption. And technology companies are rarely thinking of how their technology could potentially revolutionize the humanitarian space. So this is where I come in. For my talk today, I want to share with you some unique innovations in humanitarian technology as applied to crisis mapping and more specifically satellite imagery analysis for crisis response. Lets begin by placing these innovations into context.

They say that history is written by the victors. But now, before the victors win, there is a chance to scream out with a text message that will not vanish. What would we know about what passed between Turks and Armenians, between Germans and Jews, if every one of them had had the chance, before the darkness, to declare for all time: “I was here, and this is what happened to me”?

No public!!
We’ve seen this happen in Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, the US and Syria, to name a fewIn the case of Syria, we also partnered with Amnesty International and Tomnod to comb through high-resolution satellite imagery for further evidence of mass human rights violations. Because there was so much imagery, we recruited hundreds of volunteers from around the world to crowdsource the analysis of this imagery.Shared, synchronized awareness, HabermasSecurity issues -> satellite imageryADD OCCUPY WS SCREEN SHOT!!
