18. Among sexual minority girls
-
Physical desire and love are the predominant
reasons for sex with other girls and with guys – both
actually and hypothetically.
These motives are mentioned significantly more often
for sex with girls than with guys
Curiosity and identity exploration/confirmation are
also significant motives
Defensive motives for sex (pressure, unsafe, passing
as straight) were mentioned by a substantial minority
of participants, especially for sex with guys.

People are different in their sexual attraction to other people. Which best describes your feelings? Are you . . “Only sexually attracted to girls? Mostly, attracted to both girls and guys,
Given a “list of terms that people use to describe their sexuality or sexual orientation” What words would you use to describe your sexual identity.
The great majority chose lesbian or bisexual as one of their identity labels
For example, have you ever touched someone’s breasts, vagina, clitoris, penis, or anus (butt) or let someone touch yours.
Anysex_girls = 172 (48%) Range for girl partners (if any) 1-12, average = 1.98
Anysex_guys = 137 (39%) Range for guy partners (if any) 1-22, average = 3.07
List of potential reasons derived from focus groups
First reasons were generic ones that might apply to anyone. But there are also some reasons that are specific to having a sexual minority status or experiences.
These are listed in order of frequency for sex with girls. The first 4 reasons have the same rank order for girls and guys.
To provide a direct comparison of reasons for sex with girls vs. sex with guys, we used McNemar’s chi square exact test for motives listed participants who had had both kinds of sexual experience. As you can see, the N drops down to 97.
Rank order of top 5 reasons is the same. For the two pleasure/physical desire reasons and for being in love, for checking or proving one’s sexual orientation, the reasons were mentioned significantly more frequently for sex with girls than for sex with guys. In contrast, what we could call “defensive reasons” for sex --partner pressure, peer/family pressure, or feeling it was unsafe to say no --were significantly more often cited as reasons for sex with guys than with girls. Curiosity and being drunk or high were equally likely to motivate sex with males or females.
Participants were asked how likely it was that they would engage in different sexual acts with female or male partners in the next year. If there was any chance they might do any of the acts in the next year, they were asked to endorse those reasons that they might.
Almost all of participants who hadn’t had sex with a girl thought there was some likelihood that they might in the next year. But only 2/3 of those with no male partners thought there was any likelihood of having one in the next year.
These are listed in order of frequency for sex with girls. The first 4 reasons have the same rank order for girls and guys.
Points to note here: Being in love jumps to the top of the list, ahead of physical pleasure, when inexperienced participants thought about why they might have sex. And curiosity, which was endorsed as a reason by 35-40% among sexually experienced participants, rises to 60% or more of inexperienced participants.
Reasons for sex with males and females roughly parallel each other.
Note that for possible sex in the future among inexperienced participants, love comes first.
Being drunk or high - more a circumstance than a motive – was mentioned by about ¼ of participants as a contributing factor
Motives that could be called “defensive” – pressure from friends, family, or partner; feeling it’s unsafe to say no, trying to pass as straight – were listed by a substantial minority of participants both as reasons they had had sex and why they might in the future.
