Attention Patterns What is The Stream?
Four Questions
What comes after
The Stream
How The Stream has
changed storytelling
Hello.
8. We’re going through a transition now that is
very similar to the early years of broadcasting at
the start of the 20th century.
9. In this transition, we see the emergence of new
structures for organising attention that address
new audience behaviours.
10. In the early years of broadcasting, the new
structure was The Schedule - a way of
organising a day’s worth of attention into one
hour or half-hour blocks.
11. The schedule was first invented by the Telefon
Hirmondo in late 19th Century Budapest.
12. The new framework that has emerged and
dominated the last decade is The Stream.
17. Each of these four qualities has fundamentally
changed the production, discovery and
monetisation of stories.
18. Our stories are now discovered through social
algorithms, consumed on mobile devices, re-
contextualised through sharing and reactions,
and monetised by Google, Amazon, Facebook
or Apple.
19. We have had to learn how to tell stories for
circulation, not distribution.
20.
21. But after a decade of The Stream, we’re
starting to see its limits.
24. The Stream is fracturing into different formats
and products. It’s not going away, but it is
mutating.
25. These mutations are things that offer audiences
a better experience. Some are even more
personalised, some are even more immersive,
and some just have endings.
32. Will new kinds of public space emerge as The
Stream fragments?
