2006 TOUCHSTONE CENTER FOR CRAFT Farmington, PA. Taught wood sculpture weeklong
intensive.
2002- 2005 PITTSBURGH HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS
Pittsburgh, PA. Created and taught Sculpture curricula for grades 9-12 in the Art department.
Arranged for and coordinated off-campus exhibits of student work. Researched grant proposals
and facilitated field trips and interactive workshops with visiting artists through organizations
outside the school. Produced video of one of the workshops.
1991 CARNEGIE- MELLON UNIVERSITY Pittsburgh, PA. Taught Introductory and Advanced Relief
Printmaking specializing in reduction woodcut techniques, at the invitation of Dr. Bruce Carter
during his sabbatical.
1988 CARNEGIE- MELLON UNIVERSITY Art Department. Slide lecture on woodcut printmaking for
Dr. Bruce Carter's classes.
1988 CARNEGIE- MELLON UNIVERSITY Music Department Convocation. Slide lecture on the
historical development of musical instruments and demonstration of original instrument designs.
1987 FALK SCHOOL Pittsburgh, PA. Lecture and demonstration to third and fourth graders on
woodblock printmaking.
WORK EXPERIENCE
2007- 2008 ANIMAL FRIENDS INSTALLATION Designed and fabricated award winning water garden
architectural feature as well as a life size statue within it of a girl, a cat and a dog fabricated in
bonded bronze. The installation is the finishing touch to the entryway of the new Caryl Gates
Gluck Research Center, Animal Friends’ new headquarters in North Pittsburgh. Completed in April,
2008. Voted “People’s Choice” Award in American Institute of Architects “Design Pittsburgh”
regional competition.
1987- 2007 SOUTHMINSTER CHURCH Mt. Lebanon, PA. Highlights of ongoing projects include:
COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUES Designed and constructed wall plaques honoring the church's
pipe organists and bell ringers throughout 75 years. Composed of carved and painted wood,
etched stone and cast glass. Worked hands-on with glass and stone fabricators.
PAINTING Produced a large-scale watercolor view of the church's interior as a memorial
commission. Permanently installed in the narthex.
STAINED GLASS WINDOWS Designed a stained glass window honoring the church's bell
ringers as well as one for the church library. Acted as consultant to the fabricator.
2. CANDELABRA Designed a complete set of wrought iron candlesticks and candelabra for various
uses and occasions. Acted as consultant to the fabricator.
PIPE ORGAN WOODWORK
-Designed the fundamental arrangement of new pipes, wind chests and casework.
-Designed, manufactured and installed perforated wooden screens.
-Designed and carved Four Seasons bas-relief panels for sides of keyboard console.
-Designed and carved eight statues of allegorical figures to complete the renovation of the
Chancel organ screen.
-Designed, fabricated and installed new lighting fixtures to highlight new carvings.
-Restored, painted, and erected facade pipes for the new antiphonal organ in the back balcony.
PEDESTALS Designed and fabricated pierced wooden pedestals for the chancel flowers and the
altar cross. Fabricated from locally harvested wood.
FELLOWSHIP HALL Developed, fabricated and installed folding screens, backdrops and
crosses for transforming the hall into a casual worship area.
STAGE SETS Designed and constructed sets for three musicals: Plain and Fancy, Rainbow
Express and The Nativity According to Saint Luke.
2001 JOHNNY APPLESEED SCULPTURE Produced a 2/3-life size bonded bronze statue of John
Chapman for Mt. Lebanon Public Library. Installed in the new outdoor reading courtyard.
1998- 2000 ARLINGTON MURALS Painted a 40’x60’ wall mural depicting 100 years of neighborhood
history using source photographs solicited directly from residents. Funded through grants from
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Postcards of the murals are sold through Arlington Civic Council
to benefit the community.
1996- 1997 TOTEM POLE Washington Elementary School, Mt. Lebanon, PA. Designed and carved a 15' tall
totem pole for the newly renovated playground depicting 20 animals native to Western
Pennsylvania. Hand carved in hemlock, the state tree. Produced video documenting the process.
Presented lecture/demonstration to all-school assembly.
19 96 INDOOR AND OUTDOOR SIGNS East End Food Co-op. Site study, design options,
mechanicals, sign painting and fabrication of a roofed, steel framed billboard. Consulted to
fabricator and installer. Designed and produced interior signage including informational,
directional and aisle signs with interchangeable placards.
1992- 2002 ATELIER Worked nights as professional musician while renovating studio/residence.
1991- 1992 PRESIDENT PITTSBURGH SOCIETY OF ARTISTS Supervised all aspects of the
organization. Redesigned group logo and press package and acted as guild liaison to Pittsburgh
Center for the Arts.
1991 BAS-RELIEF Carved, painted and framed a large scale wood bas-relief for the dining room at
Fox Chapel Golf Club, Pittsburgh, PA
1988- 1990 EXHIBITION CHAIRMAN Pittsburgh Society of Artists. Was instrumental in Board meetings
and steering Committee. Installed shows on a monthly basis at Birmingham Lofts, Pittsburgh, PA.
1989 POINT TO PORT PROJECT Frick Fine Arts Center and Gallery G, Pittsburgh, PA. Worked with
Art Now Group, first place award winners in a brainstorming competition hosted by Artists Equity.
Goal was to analyze and improve the aesthetics of the parkway as connecting corridor from
3. downtown to the new airport. Group submission was a self-contained display unit featuring a
comprehensive nine-point plan, maps, graphics, illustrations, models, slide show and original
music.
1998 KIMONO STANDS Designed and constructed a privately commissioned fabric display system.
Occupies minimum space and disassembles without tools.
1987 FOYER DECORATIONS The Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh. Designed and fabricated bas-relief
plaques honoring Science, Art, Literature and Music for the fund-raiser to restore the bronze
statues at the entrances to the museum.
1987 MT. LEBANON PARKS SIGN Pittsburgh, PA. Designed multi-function signage for public park
entrances consolidating information from numerous existing signs including a display window for
maps and notices.
1986 OUTDOOR TRAVEL AGENCY SIGN Designed, fabricated and installed a large-scale model
airplane, complete with lights and a redesigned company logo.
1976- 2009 MUSIC Played music professionally in a variety of ensembles. Toured internationally as well as in
the U.S. with such groups as Southminster Handbell Choir, Floyd Beck Band (soul), Guaracha
(Latino), Ploughman’s Lunch (Irish) and others.
1981- 1983 ELECTRIC BASS VIOL Designed and fabricated several examples of a hybrid musical
instrument which combines modern electronics with a hand carved body inspired by the baroque
viola da gamba. Project included construction of contoured fiberglass road cases and electronics.
Has been used in performance since 1983.
