India is a vast country – the UK can fit into it 12 times
National language is Hindi, but each state has its own language
Balamma Satram is situated in the Kadapa region of Andhra Pradesh
in the South East of India
Telegu is the language spoken in the State of Andhra Pradesh
70% of people in Kadapa do not have sufficient food to eat
Some do not have drinking water and have to walk some distance
to get water
In the cities, animals roam among the people, but in the
villages the animals live with the people
In the cities and towns they have open sewers outside their
homes. In the villages there are no toilets and people
use fields and roadsides
LIVING FOR A CAUSE- DOING SOMETHING MEANINGFUL

the basic facilities, we experience true happiness and our own lives become
truly fulfilled. Balamma Satram Holy Family Home for the Needy offers a

The sick are offered medical aid, the elderly are given a purpose in life and
the will to live. Children are given excellent education and young teenage girls
are taught how to sew and make a living for themselves and their families.

Desperate Conditions in Surrounding Villages
These are the desperate conditions where families have to live after their homes have
been destoyed to make way for new roads. The well on the left has dried up and so people
have only the bare minimum of clean water. The water in the picture top left is all open
sewerage.

Since the year 2000, there has been very little rain. Most people live from day to day,
water is a luxuary, something we take for granted here in the western world. Disease is
rife because of the open sewers.

In most rural villages there is a hand pump for water but many times it does not work
because of all the dust and so many people resort to using water from the sewers!

In the year 2000 Fr Sarves took up the challenge to take care of the destitute people in the Kadapa
diocese
During a visit to England, Fr Sarves spoke to Mary about his mission. Mary also took up this challenge with
the help of some friends
26 acres of land was bought and from 2002 onwards a village now called Holy Family Home for the Needy
has been built
Between 2002 and 2016 many thousands of people have been cared for
The houses which have been built are to Western standards
There is clean, running drinking water (both hot and cold)
Energy is provided by solar panels
The people are provided with food, accommodation, health care and the children receive an education

which was built, this holds 80,000 litres of water. The water is then pumped back into all the
houses. Hot water is also available from the installation of solar panels.
