Nursing informatics is the integration of nursing science with information management and analytical sciences. It facilitates gathering and communicating patient data to support nursing care through technologies like electronic documentation, databases, and decision support systems. The document discusses how nursing informatics can improve healthcare quality, support education, and enable remote learning opportunities in the Philippines. Nurse informaticians work across various roles to advance healthcare through standards, research, technologies, and policies that enable safe, patient-centered care through information and communication.
2. Objective (Vera, M. 2012)
⢠To utilize information technology to help in improving the nursing care.
⢠To know the importance of nursing informatics in Philippine healthcare
delivery system
⢠To build health care informatics competencies among nursing leaders in
the country to support their need to integrate computer science,
information science and nursing science in their respective fields of
expertise.
⢠To widen the community of practice by which nursing informatics may
be applicable.
3. ⢠Nursing informatics (NI) is the specialty that integrates nursing science with
multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define,
manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom
in nursing practice. (ANA 2015)
⢠Nursing Informatics is the application of computer technology and
information science in the practice of nursing. If facilitates the gathering and
communication of data in the provision of nursing care to patients.
Definition (ANA, 2015)
4. Importance (Lee, Andrea 2013)
⢠Decision support systems like knowledge about cancer
care or maintaining information and different research
tools can be accessed by database management tools with
the help of nursing informatics. Quality monitoring can
be improved through documentation of risks and
incidents. A good example of this is the use of todayâs
technology in order to prevent or reduce medication
errors by entering an order using devices like a computer
or a tablet.
5. ⢠Technology inspired modes of instructions can also be used by Nursing
Educators for both the clients and also the nurses. Online classes are
getting more frequently conducted through the internet. Aspiring nurses
can also get their bachelorâs degree, and even a masterâs and doctoral
degrees with the use of technology. Personal computers can aid in the
management like registration, recording student grades and
maintenance of course certificates. With nursing informatics, the
informatics educator can teach different nursing staff and also the
students about the clinical, ethical and legal standards regarding
methodology and documentation.
6. ⢠Technology plays an important role in education and nursing work. So it seems
necessary to study the role of nurses and highlight the need for appropriate
information technology educational programs to integrate with the ever-
increasing pace of technology. A review accompanied by an extensive literature
search in databases and a library search focused on the keywords were used.
The criteria used for selecting studies primarily focused on nursing informatics
and the importance of expertise in the effective use of information technology
in all aspects of the nursing profession. In a critical assessment of emerging
technologies, the key elements of nursing informatics implementation were
considered as healthcare promotion, advanced systems, internet and network..
7. ⢠Applying information technology the Philippines is knowledge may help
identify potential problems earlier. For example, with the use of
electronic documentation, identifying changes in patient status can occur
quickly because the information is readily available. Trending of patient
vital signs is always accessible and the data are interpreted, systematized,
and arranged. The nurse is able to use this knowledge to formalize an
appropriate plan of action.
Application (jovelyn, C. 2014)
8. ⢠The application of nursing informatics knowledge in the Philippines is
empowering for all healthcare practitioners in achieving patient centered care.
⢠Nurse informaticians work as developers of communication and information
technologies, educators, researchers, chief nursing officers, chief information
officers, software engineers, implementation consultants, policy developers,
and business owners, to advance healthcare. Core areas of work include:
9. ⢠Concept representation and standards to support evidence-based practice, research, and
education
⢠Data and communication standards to build an interoperable national data infrastructure
⢠Research methodologies to disseminate new knowledge into practice
⢠Information presentation and retrieval approaches to support safe patient centered care
⢠Information and communication technologies to address inter-professional work flow needs
across all care venues
⢠Vision and management for the development, design, and implementation of communication
and information technology
⢠Definition of healthcare policy to advance the publicâs health
