What is Social Entrepreneurship?
• Identifying or recognizing a social problem and
  using entrepreneurial principles to organize,
create, and manage a social venture to achieved a
  desired social change.
• Typically furthers broad social, cultural, and
environment goals and is commonly associated
with the voluntary and not-for-profit sectors.
• Promoted by BILL DRAYTON, the founder of
ASHOKA: Innovators for the Public in 1980.
Noteworthy people whose work
         exemplifies classic “Social
            Entrepreneurship ”

Rights in the US, including the right to control
   property.
2. Vinoba Bhave (India) – founder and leader of the
Land Gift Movement, caused the redistribution of
more than 7,000 acres of land to India’s untouchables
   and landless.

nursing, established the first school for nurses and
   fought to improve hospital conditions.
4. Jean Monnet (France) – responsible for the
construction of the French economy following World

• Before, NGO’s and charities were “cash burn”
  affairs”!

• Difficulties of NGO’s
      - drying up of sources of finds from USA
and Europe due to their own financial crisis and
  needs
      - most of executive time spent on fund
  generation.
• New Business model is needed:
      - Sustainability
      - Profit motive needed to support activities
      - From purely non-profit to profit
• Any creative and innovative solution applied to
  solve problems (Mohammad Yunus, 2007)
      - It involves social mission
      - profit and/entrepreneurial processes
