My name is Chris Gleed and I am passionate about Emergency Preparedness. I haven’t always been interested though. As a young man, I didn’t care much about the future or heeding the prophet's counsel. But I had a couple occasions to get an idea of what it would be like when disaster happens. While living in Hawaii, I remember distinctly hearing the news that Hurricane Iniki was headed our way, and going with my parents to the grocery store, only to see the shelves pretty much cleaned out and driving to ten different stores for batteries for our flashlights, and standing in lines for two hours. Then in 1989, while on my mission in the San Francisco Bay Area, when the 7.2 Loma Prieta Earthquake struck. I remember with great clarity standing in my bedroom, when I heard a great rumbling, and the ground began shaking so violently I couldn’t stand on my feet. But it wasn’t until I got married that I realized the full weight of the responsibilities I had as a husband and a father to care for and provide for my family in difficult times. But as I’ve learned about Provident Living, I’ve realized that I and many of us have the wrong idea of what it means to be prepared. So on the next little while I hope to help you realize that it is easy to live providently, and fun, and I’m confident crucial to your survival, both physically and spiritually.
So, are you confused. About why you should be prepared? I admit there is a lot that can be overwhelming, and sometimes you feel like, why even try, when you are barely making day by day. But I’m here to tell you that if I can get prepared, then so can you.
So first and foremost, the most important reason to be prepared, is because God has told us to. Along with paying a full tithe, obeying the word of wisdom and many other commandments, we are commanded to be prepared for what may come.
Interestingly enough, the two that concern me the most are the first two. Prophecies of Pres Taylor, Pres George Albert Smith, and several other prophets in regards to Utah all speak of a plague. And ten years ago, Pres. Hinckley directed the Tabernacle and many other church buildings to be retrofitted to stand against an earthquake.
Contrary to public opinion, the Church no longer recommends buckets and buckets of wheat. At least at first. Instead, it recommends you build up a storage of three months of food you normally eat. So when you go buy stuff to make spaghetti, buy one extra. Each time you do this, you will gradually build up your stores of food. This way you can survive for three months eating everything you are used to. This is something even newlyweds can do. Incidntaltly, in regards to the plqgue, I mentioned, the standard time for quarantine during n outbreak is 90 days (three months).
Then after you have your three months of food, you are counseled to add long term storage. This is where the wheat and beans etc come in. So then you get 9 months of the long term storage, and all of a sudden you have a full year of food storage. This way, your three month supply becomes a part of your year supply and all of a sudden you can now eat one meal that you are used to and eat the long term storage the other meals. This way you aren’t left to eat wheat and beans for one year.
Storing water can be a big hardship, so I suggest you store a minimum of two weeks worth of water, and then get a good water filter.
Church doesn’t promote 72 hour kit. Although it is a good idea, and better than nothing, especially in an emergency. But you should also consider
The main idea we are counseled to is get back to the basics and back to our roots. We’re not talking about something new, but rather going back to living the way our grandparents lived. Learn skills. Use them. Stop living in a disposable world. Pres. Packer’s quote from Regional Conference.
