1. HISTORY OF MUSIC
VIDEOS
A music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced
for promotional or artistic purposes.”
2. THE IMPORTANCE OF MUSIC VIDEOS
• Music videos in the modern world of music are of huge importance; this medium
of interaction between fans and artists enables musicians to express their own
individual style and showcase other impressionable aspects such as fashion and
beliefs. Music videos can set trends and, regarding mostly pop videos, can
guarantee an increase in fame for the artist from including dance routines which
are learnt by fans and listeners.
• By creating videos artists can generate and form a fan base for themselves; this
can stem from viewers becoming interested in the lifestyle, morals and beliefs of
the artist which are shown through their videos. Fan bases build and increase
popularity meaning their music will be heard by more people and become more
famous.
3. MUSIC VIDEOS IN THE 1960’S
• Things stayed pretty much as they were for a while and then two huge
things happened. Rock and Roll hit and television became the dominant
media form. Suddenly popular music was on the television and when the big
stars couldn’t appear something had to replace them. Some musicians had
already started to experiment with promotional film. These were
experimental and more arts based.

5. MUSIC VIDEOS IN THE 70’S
• From 1972–73 David Bowie starred in a variety of promotional films which were directed
by a photographer called Mick Rock. Rock edited and was director for four clips
to advertise four David Bowie singles including "John, I'm Only Dancing", "The Jean
Genie", "Space Oddity" and "Life on Mars?". The footage for "John, I'm Only Dancing"
was created with a budget of only $200 and recorded on August 19, 1972. It showcases
Bowie and his band lip synching to the record with footage of Bowie's dancers performing
on stage.
• Along side this, country music also took on the idea of promotional clips.
• Sam Lovullo, the producer of a TV series named Hee Haw, claimed his show presented the
first musical videos. Meanwhile JMI Records made the same claim with Don Williams'
1973 song, "The Shelter of Your Eyes".
6. 1990’S CENSORSHIP
• Queen- body language. It got banned because it was seen as unsuitable for the
audience because of the lack of clothing and the amount of sweat.
• They don’t care about us- Michael Jackson got banned
• This led to the launching of MTV in 1981. MTV was a channel that played music
video 24 hours a day and made stars overnight. Madonna, Duran Duran and Dire
Straits owe their careers to MTV.
• MTV and the music video channels that copied made the music video big
business. Michael Jackson got director John Landis to direct his Thriller video
and the big budget video came about.
7. MODERN DAY MUSIC VIDEOS
• Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device
intended to promote the sale of music recordings. New music videos have a
mix of narrative and performance. Now music television is in decline and the
internet has taken over as the platform for music video. Youtube, Facebook
and iTunes are now the go to places for artists.
• The song is the most important aspect and that should dominate over the
video therefore the music video is a form of advertising. Cheap technology
also means videos can be made on any budget.
