Over 314 million people worldwide are visually impaired due to various causes, with 45 million being blind. The majority of visual impairment is caused by uncorrected refractive errors and cataract. Blindness from infectious diseases is decreasing due to public health efforts, though 40 million people still have trachoma. Around half of childhood blindness is avoidable through early treatment and correcting abnormalities at birth. Most visually impaired people live in low- and middle-income countries.
