The Grandis project - aiming to develop
education and training material for carers so
that they will use technology in caring for older
people to improve their safery, welbeing and
improve their lives when living in the
community - has completed its first stage. This
part of the project surveyed and compared the
current status of the use of of technoogy in
care of the elderly in four European countries,
the UK, Ireland, France, and Hungary. This
study was to determine the potential of
technology in older adults' care and the
accompanying vocational education and
training required.
A desktop survey by each partner produced
four national reports on the social care policy
and legislation in each country, the vocational
education and training they have already in
place for social care workers, the increasing
demand through population ageing, the
existing types of technologies supporting this
demand, and gaps to be addressed in the
current curricula for training carers.
The Grandis desktop surveys carried out in
Output 1 (O1) have shown a high level of
interest in adopting technology to aid in the
care for elderly adults in their own homes.
The second Output, O2, development of th
curriculum for what the project has called "The
Networked Elderly Caregiver" was the subject
of the project meeting in Ireland in November
2017. The aim was to complete the content of
the modules, using a top-down approach. The
standard elements were listed and agreed,
while understanding that the methods of
teaching would need to be both flexible and
motivating for its participants, as we must
presume that the carers, who are adult learers,
will undertake the course on a part-time basis
while they are working.

A blended methodology was planned, with
online content presented, and also some face-
to-face contact to maximise engagement. It
was decided that each partners would select
specific technologies (devices, sensors etc) so
that the core curricular principles can be
delivered with reference to local needs and
availability of technology. To conclude, a
robust curriculum was finalised, to be delivered
via a custom-built online environment. This
was an ideal introduciton to the next tasks for
partners, the identificaiton of locally available
devices that the localised training wold be built
around.
PROJECT INFORMATION
GRANDIS XXI. project aims to develop a competence-based, modular training programme for formal and
informal caregivers. It will empower them with advanced health literacy
and tailored digital competencies, with special ICT skills in using eHealth
technologies like smart devices, social alarms, wristbands, and special tele-
diagnostic tools installed in the home. They will be able to manage, mentor
and facilitate activities of elderly people in virtual communities through
using ICT-based communication and online learning tools.
TARGET GROUPS
‱ students of vocational education
‱ formal caregivers, care workers
‱ informal caregivers involved in the long-term-care of their relatives
‱ „young” elderly people retired from related professions (e.g. teachers), who are interested in working
as informal caregivers in online communities

GRANDIS NEWSLETTER 2nd issue PUBLISHED BY: ICS - Skills November/2017 EDITORS: David Cleary, Mary Cleary Copyright © GRANDIS Consortium WELCOME TO IRELAND 23rd – 24thNovember, 2017 The Grandis project - aiming to develop education and training material for carers so that they will use technology in caring for older people to improve their safery, welbeing and improve their lives when living in the community - has completed its first stage. This part of the project surveyed and compared the current status of the use of of technoogy in care of the elderly in four European countries, the UK, Ireland, France, and Hungary. This study was to determine the potential of technology in older adults' care and the accompanying vocational education and training required. A desktop survey by each partner produced four national reports on the social care policy and legislation in each country, the vocational education and training they have already in place for social care workers, the increasing demand through population ageing, the existing types of technologies supporting this demand, and gaps to be addressed in the current curricula for training carers. The Grandis desktop surveys carried out in Output 1 (O1) have shown a high level of interest in adopting technology to aid in the care for elderly adults in their own homes. The second Output, O2, development of th curriculum for what the project has called "The Networked Elderly Caregiver" was the subject of the project meeting in Ireland in November 2017. The aim was to complete the content of the modules, using a top-down approach. The standard elements were listed and agreed, while understanding that the methods of teaching would need to be both flexible and motivating for its participants, as we must presume that the carers, who are adult learers, will undertake the course on a part-time basis while they are working.

A blended methodology was planned, with online content presented, and also some face- to-face contact to maximise engagement. It was decided that each partners would select specific technologies (devices, sensors etc) so that the core curricular principles can be delivered with reference to local needs and availability of technology. To conclude, a robust curriculum was finalised, to be delivered via a custom-built online environment. This was an ideal introduciton to the next tasks for partners, the identificaiton of locally available devices that the localised training wold be built around. PROJECT INFORMATION GRANDIS XXI. project aims to develop a competence-based, modular training programme for formal and informal caregivers. It will empower them with advanced health literacy and tailored digital competencies, with special ICT skills in using eHealth technologies like smart devices, social alarms, wristbands, and special tele- diagnostic tools installed in the home. They will be able to manage, mentor and facilitate activities of elderly people in virtual communities through using ICT-based communication and online learning tools.
