What is Women Empowerment?
Women empowerment is giving power to
women to decide for their own lives or
inculcating such abilities in them so that
they could be able to find their rightful
place in the society.
Why need of women empowerment?
 Gender discrimination
 Women education
 Female infanticide
 Dowry system
 Child marriage
CONSTITUTION OF INDIA AND WOMEN
EMPOWERMENT
PREAMBLE
The preamble to the constitution of
India assures justice, social, economic
and political equality of status and
opportunity and dignity to the
individual. Thus it treats both men and
women equal.
FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS
The policy of women
empowerment is well established
in the fundamental rights preserved
in our constitution.
Article 14
Ensures to women the right to
equality.
Article 15(1)
Specifically prohibits
discrimination on the basis of sex.
Article 15(3)
Empowers the state to take
affirmative actions in favour of
women.
Article 16
Provides for equality of opportunity
for all citizens in the matters relating
to employment or appointment to any
office.
DIRECTIVE PRINCIPLES
OF STATE POLICY
It also contains important provisions
regarding women empowerment and it
is the duty of the government to apply
these principles while making laws or
formulating any policy.
Provides that the State to direct its
policy towards securing for men and
women equally the right to an
adequate means of livelihood.
Article 39(d)
Provides equal pay for equal work
for both men and women.
Article 42
Provides that the State to make
provision for securing just and humane
conditions of work and for maternity
relief.
FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES
Fundamental duties are preserved in part
IV-A of the constitution and are positive
duties for the people of India to follow. It
also contains a duty related to women’s
rights.
Article 51(A)
Expects the citizen of the country to
promote harmony and the spirit of
common brotherhood amongst all the
people of India and to renounce practices
derogatory to the dignity of women.
SPECIFIC LAWS FOR WOMEN
EMPOWERMENT IN INDIA
The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976
The act aims to provide for the payment
of equal remuneration to men and
women workers and for the prevention
of discrimination, on the ground of sex.

The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961

An act to prohibit the giving or taking
of dowry. It extends to the whole of
India except the State of Jammu and
Kashmir.
The Immoral Traffic (Prevention)
Act, 1956

It is an act which provides in pursuance of the
International Convention signed at New York
on the 9th day of May, 1956, for the
prevention of immoral traffic. It extends to
the whole of India.
The Maternity Benefit Act,
1961

An act to regulate the employment of
women in certain establishments for
certain periods before and after child
birth and to provide for maternity
benefit and certain other benefits.
The Medical Termination of
Pregnancy Act, 1971

It was enacted by the Indian Parliament
with the intention of reducing the
incidence of illegal abortion and
consequent maternal mortality and
morbidity.
The Commission of Sati
(Prevention) Act, 1987

An act provide for the more effective
prevention of the commission of sati
and its glorification.
The Prohibition of Child Marriage
Act, 2006

The object of the act is to prohibit child
marriage and connected and incidental
matters.
The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic
Techniques (regulation prevention of misuse)
Act, 1994

  • 4. CONSTITUTION OF INDIA AND WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
  • 5. PREAMBLE The preamble to the constitution of India assures justice, social, economic and political equality of status and opportunity and dignity to the individual. Thus it treats both men and women equal.
  • 6. FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS The policy of women empowerment is well established in the fundamental rights preserved in our constitution.
  • 7. Article 14 Ensures to women the right to equality.
  • 9. Article 15(3) Empowers the state to take affirmative actions in favour of women.
  • 10. Article 16 Provides for equality of opportunity for all citizens in the matters relating to employment or appointment to any office.
  • 11. DIRECTIVE PRINCIPLES OF STATE POLICY It also contains important provisions regarding women empowerment and it is the duty of the government to apply these principles while making laws or formulating any policy.
  • 12. Provides that the State to direct its policy towards securing for men and women equally the right to an adequate means of livelihood.
  • 13. Article 39(d) Provides equal pay for equal work for both men and women.
  • 14. Article 42 Provides that the State to make provision for securing just and humane conditions of work and for maternity relief.
  • 15. FUNDAMENTAL DUTIES Fundamental duties are preserved in part IV-A of the constitution and are positive duties for the people of India to follow. It also contains a duty related to women’s rights.
  • 16. Article 51(A) Expects the citizen of the country to promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people of India and to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women.
  • 17. SPECIFIC LAWS FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN INDIA
  • 18. The Equal Remuneration Act, 1976 The act aims to provide for the payment of equal remuneration to men and women workers and for the prevention of discrimination, on the ground of sex. 1
  • 19. The Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 2 An act to prohibit the giving or taking of dowry. It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • 20. The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 3 It is an act which provides in pursuance of the International Convention signed at New York on the 9th day of May, 1956, for the prevention of immoral traffic. It extends to the whole of India.
  • 21. The Maternity Benefit Act, 1961 4 An act to regulate the employment of women in certain establishments for certain periods before and after child birth and to provide for maternity benefit and certain other benefits.
  • 22. The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 5 It was enacted by the Indian Parliament with the intention of reducing the incidence of illegal abortion and consequent maternal mortality and morbidity.
  • 23. The Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act, 1987 6 An act provide for the more effective prevention of the commission of sati and its glorification.
  • 24. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 7 The object of the act is to prohibit child marriage and connected and incidental matters.
