1. The Trip of a Lifetime
Vacation time!!! Ya-hoo! It seemed like forever coming, but finally the day had arrived.
Two best friends, Sage and Kyrie, were leaving for the Bahamas. Sage is a 10 year-old girl
from New Zealand with blond hair, baby blue eyes and freckles. She is 4’11 and skinny.
Sage loves playing sports, with her favorite being gymnastics. Sage’s best friend is Kyrie.
Kyrie has light brown hair, green eyes and freckles. She is from California, USA and
Toronto, Canada. She is also 10 years-old. Sage and Kyrie both live in New York.
As the plane was coming in to land, Sage saw a bright light in the ocean below. It was a
bright white strobe light, like the kind that you see at concerts. Sage gasped and then
pointed it out to Kyrie. They didn’t know how, but the two decided that they had to find out
what the light was and where it was coming from. It was twelve hours into their flight that
had left from JFK airport. They were now so excited that they could barely keep from
jumping out of their seats.
Sage and Kyrie were planning to stay at Kyrie’s Dad’s private island named Kyrie’s Oasis.
Kyrie’s Dad has properties all over the world and so she is lucky to be able to take
holidays practically anywhere she wants. Unlike Sage who has a younger brother and
sister, Kyrie is an only child so she is the “apple of her Dad’s eye” and pretty much gets
anything she wants. After spotting the light from the plane, their plans to stay at Kyrie’s
Oasis were about to change.
Once they landed, the two best friends quickly unpacked their suitcases, throwing clothes
every which way near the dressers. After finding their swim suits in the mess, they sprinted
down to the water’s edge and dove in. Almost immediately, they realized that they had a

ocean.
All of the sudden, they saw the light, the one that they had spotted from the plane. They
were in awe. The light was more than just a light. It was a beautiful white building that was
about four stories tall, fully submerged under the water and being held up by four shiny
white pillars on each corner. The building read, “The Underwater Resort and Spa”. Sage
and Kyrie were fascinated and took a look around. Even though they were under the
ocean, each suite had a pool and a jacuzzi and was the size of a full size football field.
Faster than you could say “Bahama-rama”, they quickly contacted Kyrie’s Dad and asked
if they could stay there. Of course he wanted them to be happy, so he agreed and paid for
the two girls over the phone with his credit card.
The following morning, Sage and Kyrie woke up, got their bathing suits back on, and swam
the 200m back to the shore of Kyrie’s Oasis. Once they got to shore, they wanted to
explore more, so Sage suggested that they take a boat trip to the different islands of the
Bahamas. Sage and Kyrie found the local boat driver named Sam who worked for Kyrie’s
Dad and knew his way around. He was willing to take them on his motor boat for a 3-hour
trip. All was set and looking good, until something went terribly wrong.
It was drizzling like a light mist when they left the dock, but that didn’t stop the best friends
from continuing on their once-in-a-lifetime adventure. About halfway into their boat trip, it
started to pour down a little harder. They wanted to continue, but Sam said it would be
safer to head back to Kyrie’s Oasis. What they didn’t realize was that the rain before was
only the beginning of a huge storm.

3. Another 5 minutes went by, and the storm kept approaching and getting bigger and bigger.
Sage, Kyrie and Sam knew what was in store for them... a very hard time getting back on
the beach with the high speed winds and very big waves. Just as Sam was turning on the
weather forecast on the boat, a huge, looming 10-foot wave hit the boat and capsized it.
The girls and Sam all went flying into the water.
Sage was the first one to surface. Next was Kyrie and there was no sign of Sam. Sage and
Kyrie went looking underwater for Sam; afterall, they could breathe underwater. They
searched high and low, under coral and in seaweed. Sam was nowhere to be found.
“Kyrie, we need to find Sam! If we don’t, we will always be thinking about we could have
done.” said Sage frantically.
Kyrie shrieked back, while spitting out water, “You’re right, we need to look harder than we
have ever before and get him back to shore.”
Barely heard above the noise of the waves, Sage agreed, “Ok, it will be dark soon, so we
should look for maybe 10 more minutes and then head back to shore. Remember, we still
have to tug this 400-pound boat back.”
Sage and Kyrie were extremely panicked and upset that they had lost Sam. They knew
they had to flip the boat back over, which was very challenging. As Kyrie thought to
herself, “We will never be able to find...”, Kyrie was stopped in mid sentence because a big
gust of wind blew the whole 400 pound boat back upright. They were just the slightest bit
happy that they didn’t have to tug the boat all the way back, but were still very upset.

4. Sage and Kyrie got back into the boat, knowing in the back of their minds that they were
going to have to tell the people on the shore about Sam. They would have to go looking for
him when the storm passed. The girls were so scared and upset that Sage’s face was as
red as a beet and her arms and legs were shaking because of how upset she was. Sage
and Kyrie also were aware that they were somehow going to have to get themselves and
the boat back to shore. They were nervous but were up for the challenge. Sage had never
worked on a boat before but knew a few things like how to steer one. Kyrie on the other
hand, had no idea whatsoever about boats.
The girls got right to work, with Sage in charge of steering the boat and Kyrie in charge of
bailing the remaining water off the deck. Luckily, the girls were really close to Kyrie’s
Oasis. Within ten minutes, they were safely back on land with no more damage done...
except for Sam being missing. As they docked the boat, Sage and Kyrie got off and, sadly,
had to tell the villagers what had happened. The villagers were all friends of Sam’s, and so
they were shocked and terrified to find out. They began a search party immediately. Sage
and Kyrie knew there was nothing else they could do, and since the dangerous part of the
storm had passed, they swam back to the Underwater Resort and Spa feeling worse than
ever. To cheer themselves up, and pass the time while they waited to hear news about
Sam, they went for a swim in their pool and ate dinner at one of the many restaurants at
the resort.
Beep! Beep! Beep! Sage woke up with a jerk. She quickly woke Kyrie up, too, because
they were leaving for home that afternoon. They quickly had to pack their bags and head
off to the airport. Sage and Kyrie were feeling guilty when they were leaving the
Underwater Resort and Spa, knowing that Sam was still missing. After thanking all of the
wonderful staff, they swam to the surface.

5. As they emerged, they saw something that they couldn’t believe. Was it real? It was Sam
and yes, it was real! They ran over to him and hugged him, maybe a little too hard,
because he gave out a gasp. Sage and Kyrie excitedly asked questions, talking over each
other. “What happened?”, “How long were you in the water?” and “How did you survive?” It
turns out, Sam was underwater for about one minute under the boat. He was able to free
himself and swam all the way to shore in the storm. It took him about half an hour to get
through all the rip tides. When he got to shore, he was shivering and all wet and cold. As
Sam remembers, a villager he knew saw him, wrapped him in blankets and took him home
to his relieved family. Sam was a little traumatized by the whole terrible experience, but is
healthy and happy.
Within an hour, Sage and Kyrie were on their plane, heading back to New York. It had
been the memorable trip that they wanted: happy and sad and scary and exciting. It was
one that they will never forget for a very, long time.
